Peter had always been careful in business. He knew how quickly things could go sideways if you weren’t paying attention.
“Peter, if things get tough, maybe we should ask the main family for help,” Autumn suggested. “Jessie, isn’t your family on good terms with them?”
Jessie hesitated, looking a bit uncomfortable. “I’ll ask my dad, but I can’t promise anything. You know how strict the head of their family is about following the rules.”
Autumn understood. No matter how hard they tried over the years, the other side never really accepted them. The only reason Peter ever got close to the Clarksons was because Jessie grew up with their youngest daughter. Even then, it was just a small step forward.
Jessie knew all the details, but Eleanor didn’t have a clue.
Autumn quickly switched up her attitude, her voice suddenly full of warmth. “Jessie, I always knew you were the capable one. You’re so much better than Eleanor.”
Jessie glowed at the compliment, feeling a rush of pride. “Mom, don’t say that. I’m just doing what I should.”
Later that day, Jessie called up her childhood friend, Katie.
“Jessie! You haven’t called in forever,” Katie answered with a laugh.
“Katie, I need a little favor. You know how Peter’s kind of connected to your family. Could you help me set up a dinner with your uncle?”
Katie was always loyal. “Of course, but I can’t make it too obvious. My uncle, Max, isn’t a fan of that side of the family, and neither is my grandpa. There’s a charity gala this weekend. How about I get you two invitations? Would that work?”
Jessie’s eyes sparkled. “That’s perfect. You’re the best, Katie. Love you!”
She hung up, smiling to herself.
Eleanor, this is where you and I are different.

Eleanor hadn’t expected to get her acceptance letter from Clarkson Corporation so soon. There wasn’t even a second interview. They just hired her on the spot.
She spun happily around her tiny apartment, unable to stop smiling.
The first person she called was her best friend, Yolanda.
“Eleanor, I’m so happy for you! It’s a fresh start. So, is the divorce next on your list?”
“Congrats, Eleanor! That’s really great news.”
“Try some cake. It’s chocolate, but you can only have two bites. Just enough to satisfy your sweet tooth.”
Jared’s health meant he had to be careful with his diet, and Eleanor never let him overdo it.
He took a bite, his face lighting up. “So sweet. I feel so lucky, Eleanor.”
Eleanor’s heart melted. “Silly, how are you lucky?”
Jared smiled, his eyes gentle. “I have a mom who loves me and a sister who spoils me. Isn’t that luck?”
He leaned back, thinking. “Oh, and the hospital director came by today. He told me I could stay as long as I needed and not to worry about a thing. He also asked if I knew a Mr. Clarkson.”
Eleanor’s eyebrows lifted. “Mr. Clarkson?”
She remembered what the department head had told her earlier. So, the person helping her was also named Clarkson?
