Sydney nodded. “That promo photo really worked. We’ve had a bunch of customers come in because of it. Honestly, it’s a good thing.” She didn’t think much more about it.
The next day, Peter and Jessie went to take their wedding photos. Everything felt rushed. They ended up in a photo studio, and honestly, it was a mess from the start.
The weather was awful. Rain poured down, the wind howled, and they had to move everything indoors at the last minute. Jessie’s dress was drenched before they even started, so someone had to dry it with a hairdryer. One thing after another just kept going wrong.
But the worst part? Peter was completely checked out. He barely paid attention, just staring off into space. Jessie kept asking if he was okay, but every time, he just brushed her off with a quiet “I’m fine.” If that were true, why did he feel so far away?
By the time they finished, Jessie was exhausted inside and out. She felt like she could break at any second. In the car, she finally let her frustration spill out.
“Peter, what is going on with you today?” she asked, voice tight.
“The photographer kept telling you to smile. You wouldn’t. Our pictures are going to look terrible. What are we supposed to do about that?”
Peter kept his eyes on the window, watching the city blur by. His voice was so soft she almost missed it. “She got married.”
Jessie blinked, confused. “Who?”
Peter shook his head. “It’s nothing. Whatever the photos look like, we’ll just have them edited. We can afford it, so don’t worry. I’m sorry, Jessie. Work’s just been overwhelming lately.”
That’s when it hit her. He was talking about Eleanor. Who else could it be?
Jessie couldn’t understand it. Before their divorce, Peter had treated her like she was the center of his world. But now, somehow, they just kept growing further apart.
She wanted to scream, to cry, or even scratch his face out of frustration. But she stopped herself. After learning the truth about her own past, Jessie was more scared than ever. Peter was the only person she had left to hold on to. That old feeling of being on top of the world was long gone. If her secret ever came out, even the people who cared for her most would leave.
So, she swallowed her anger.
“Peter, I’m not mad at you. I just feel a little sad, that’s all. You’ll stay by my side, right?” She looked at him, searching for reassurance.
Peter stared at the shadows of the trees flickering on the pavement. “I will, Jessie. I’m not going anywhere.” He said it for her, but maybe he needed to hear it, too.
