A week later, Eleanor got a call from Jared’s homeroom teacher.

“Ms. Rolland, do you have time to come by the school today? I’d like to talk to you about Jared.”

Eleanor said yes right away. She couldn’t help but worry. Was Jared getting bullied again?

When she arrived, she couldn’t help but laugh a little at herself. This was the first time she’d ever been called in because Jared wasn’t paying attention in class.

“Jared’s been a bit distracted lately,” the teacher explained. “His grades are still good, but when I asked him about it, he told me he stopped living in the dorms. Now he goes to an internet cafe after school every day.”

“He’s a smart kid, but if he gets addicted to gaming, that could really turn into a problem.”

Eleanor understood what the teacher was getting at. Just because his grades hadn’t slipped yet didn’t mean they wouldn’t.

That weekend, she brought Jared home with her. One look at the dark circles under his eyes and she knew the teacher was telling the truth.

“Jared, has school been keeping you busy lately?”

He shook his head. “Not really. Actually, Eleanor, I got first place in my class and in the whole grade on the last monthly exam.”

She blinked. “That’s... pretty great.”

Jared handed her a small box. “This is for you, Eleanor. Congrats on your marriage.”

Eleanor recognized the logo on the jewelry box right away. “Wait, this is expensive. Where did you get the money for this?”

Jared rubbed his nose, looking a little awkward. “From my savings. You know, leftover allowance and stuff.”

Eleanor frowned. “You had that much saved up?”

She thought for a second. “What are you doing at the internet cafe every night? Are you boosting accounts for people?”

The only thing she could think of that needed a computer was gaming, maybe helping others climb the ranks for money.

Jared looked surprised. “No, it’s not that.”

“Jared, just be honest with me.”

He scratched his head. “I took on some freelance work. Wrote some code, made a bit of money. If I was boosting accounts, I’d have to play until I dropped to make this much.”

Eleanor stared. She hadn’t realized Jared had that kind of skill.
