Eleanor paused, that greasy face flickering through her mind.

“Dead is dead.” Her voice was flat, almost indifferent.

She couldn't feel anything for a man who had tried to kidnap and blackmail her. Not even a hint of pity.

Max seemed to agree. “Should we keep looking into it?”

“They say some Harborview gangsters were after him for debts. He fell off a building while they were chasing him.”

“So let's just leave it.”

What was there to dig up about a gambler like that, anyway? Eleanor gave a faint, almost careless smile. “It doesn’t matter if we keep looking or not. He got what he deserved.”

Now that Patrick Lee, a complete parasite, was gone, Eleanor could finally stop worrying about him popping up again.

“So, can you call off the bodyguards you put on me?”

“No.” Max didn’t even hesitate. “You’re my wife. I never tried to hide that. If the wrong people find out, I can’t guarantee your safety.” He softened a little. “Don’t worry, they’re professionals. They won’t get in your way.”

His voice was warm. “They’re there to protect you, not to watch your every move.”

Eleanor nodded. She had nothing to hide. Her life was nothing but work and home these days.

“Alright. I get it. Thanks.”

Max’s lips curved into a smile. “You’re forgetting, there’s no need for thank yous between us.”

Later that day, Peter Clarkson showed up at The Clarkson Estate with a wedding invitation. Max happened to walk in and saw him in the living room, chatting with his father.

“Max, you’re home,” George said, throwing him a look and glancing behind, clearly checking if Eleanor was with him. Only when he saw she wasn’t did he relax. The whole situation with Max marrying his grand-nephew’s ex-wife was still a bit much for him to process, and he wanted no part in it.

Peter grinned, trying a little too hard. “Max.”
