From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 274

It was Peter Clarkson’s bachelor party. In just two days, he’d be marrying Jessie Goff.

He’d been drinking a lot, and the alcohol burned in his stomach. He stepped outside for some air, trying to clear his head. His tolerance wasn’t what it used to be. He should have been happy, with the wedding right around the corner. But every time he took another sip, he’d see Eleanor’s gentle face, hear her softly asking if he wanted some tea to sober up.

Sometimes he caught himself wishing that if he just drank enough, he’d wake up to find Eleanor there, feeding him tea, one spoon at a time. Regret kept sneaking up on him, and he tried not to think too much about it. He was afraid he’d get lost in those memories and not find his way out.

After a while, he finished his cigarette, brushed the ashes from his jacket, and headed back inside.

Eleanor, meanwhile, had been on a winning streak at the tables. She knew when to quit, so she tugged on Max’s pinky. “I’m done. No more games for me.”

Max picked up on it right away. He gave a lazy smile. “My wife says she’s done for the night. You guys better practice before you take her on again.”

He slipped his arm around her and led her away, leaving the others grumbling behind them. Max always had to get the last word, and as much as it annoyed everyone, no one dared say anything back.

Eleanor ducked into the restroom to fix her makeup, and Max waited for her right outside.

After they left, a bunch of people crowded around Linden, shaking their heads in disbelief. “After tonight, Max’s reputation as the ultimate wife guy is totally set.”

Linden smiled. That was exactly what Max wanted.

Max leaned against the wall outside, his cheeks still a little flushed from the drinks. There was a faint trace of alcohol on him, but he looked relaxed.

When Eleanor came out, looking fresh, she reached for his hand. “Let’s go.”

Max’s eyes darkened as he stared at her lips. He didn’t move.

Eleanor tilted her head, giving him a puzzled look. “Aren’t we leaving?”

He narrowed his eyes and grinned. “How much can you drink?”

Eleanor shook her head. “One drink and I’m out.”

Max’s grin grew as he spun her around, pressing her gently against the wall and trapping her between himself and the cool surface. He tilted her chin up, leaning in close.
