The room felt tense, like everyone was waiting for something to go wrong.

Jessie Goff was the classic rich girl, spoiled and high maintenance. But really, wasn’t everyone a little spoiled in their own way? Still, nobody could help but think of Eleanor, with her gentle smile and quiet patience. She was the kind of woman people admired without even realizing it. The guys used to joke, teasing Peter about how lucky he was to be marrying Jessie. But if it came down to it, none of them would have picked a Jessie. They’d all have chosen an Eleanor.

“Alright, enough. What are you even talking about?” someone cut in, sounding annoyed.

“I’m calling Jessie. And when she gets here, can you all please keep your mouths shut?”

Peter was sprawled on the couch, completely wasted, oblivious to the conversation happening around him.

Jessie had just finished her nightly routine and was about to crawl into bed when the phone rang. She wasn’t happy about it, but she took a breath, pushed down her annoyance, changed back into her clothes, and headed out to pick him up.

When she walked into the private room and saw Peter, drunk and totally out of it, she frowned. “Why did you let him drink so much?”

“Jessie, I was just having a good time. Had a little too much, that’s all,” one of the guys slurred.

Jessie shot him a look that could kill. “Next time, don’t let him drink like this. If you do, I won’t let him go out with you guys again.” She didn’t care about sounding harsh. Someone had to say it. She struggled to get Peter to his feet, supporting his weight as they headed out the door.

Behind them, Peter’s friends looked a little embarrassed, rubbing their noses and avoiding each other’s eyes.

Someone mumbled, “Eleanor would never have snapped at us like that.”

“Let it go. Peter’s wedding is in two days. Don’t ruin the vibe,” another said.

Still, for the first time, the guys who used to hype up Jessie found themselves thinking that maybe Eleanor had been the better choice after all.
