Backstage, Jessie Goff stormed in and yanked off her veil, tossing it on the floor. Her voice rose in a sharp cry. “Eleanor did this on purpose, didn’t she? She just came to watch me embarrass myself!”

Peter Clarkson closed the door behind them, rubbing his forehead. “Keep your voice down. What’s done is done. You just have to deal with it now.”

He was trying to convince Jessie, but really, he was talking to himself too. What was he supposed to do? March out there and confront Max? He’d never dare.

Just then, Autumn arrived at the makeup room with Olga in tow. She wanted to hear for herself what kind of mess had unfolded today. Even through the door, Olga could hear Jessie’s furious rant.

She shrank behind her grandmother, her voice small. “Grandma, is Mommie Jessie mad at me?”

It was the first time she’d heard her gentle aunt so angry, and it left her lost and scared.

Autumn ran a hand over Olga’s hair, trying to soothe her. It wasn’t all Olga’s fault. How could she have known the people in front would suddenly stop walking?
