George was at a loss for words. For a moment, he had no idea what to think. This was supposed to be Peter Clarkson’s wedding, yet somehow his own son was the one grabbing all the attention.
Peter finally managed to convince Jessie Goff to come out, but when he saw what was happening, his face darkened again. Jessie glared at the woman in the center of the crowd. That dazzling smile of hers felt almost like a slap in the face. Jessie wanted nothing more than to wipe it away herself, her own face twisted with frustration.
The photographer was having a nightmare. Every time he aimed the camera at the bride, her expression looked like she was ready to bite someone’s head off.
Peter turned away and quietly picked up his wine glass. “Let’s get started. We’ll begin with your family.”
He needed a moment to pull himself together before facing the Clarksons.
Otto followed along with his new son-in-law, still amazed at how chaotic this wedding had become. The friends and relatives from the Goff family barely paid attention during the toasts. Otto just wanted the whole thing to be over already.
Paola and Kristina showed up together.
“Grandma, they really do look alike,” Kristina said softly.
Paola nodded. “I know, Kristina. But there’s been a little misunderstanding between me and Eleanor.”
She kept to herself that this misunderstanding was all thanks to Jessie Goff.
Kristina looked thoughtful. “I’d like to meet her someday, if I get the chance.”
Paola shook her head. “Let’s just see what happens. Eleanor’s very guarded and principled. I honestly never thought she’d end up marrying Max.”
Paola had even tried setting her up with someone else not long ago. It felt pretty pointless now. Still, she genuinely hoped that this girl, who reminded her so much of her late daughter, could find real happiness. It was almost like wishing her own daughter happiness in another world.
After making the rounds, it was finally Peter’s turn to toast the Clarkson family. Autumn was careful not to seem rude, and Otto brought his sons along to join the group.
The newlyweds looked uncomfortable. Peter forced a smile and raised his glass. “Thank you for coming, Grandpa George. It means a lot.”
Max suddenly spoke up, almost like he was looking for drama. “Peter, I forgot to introduce someone. This is my wife, Eleanor. We’re having our wedding at the end of the month. She’s your Aunt Eleanor now, too.”
