From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 287

Jessie had been waiting in her room ever since Peter walked into the villa. Her father's words kept echoing in her mind, especially since she was still hiding a secret. She wasn’t really the Goffs’ biological daughter. If anyone ever found out, she would need someone strong to lean on, someone who could protect her. Right now, the only person who fit that role was Peter Clarkson.

“Jessie, it’s me. Can you open the door?”

When Jessie finally opened the door, her eyes were red and puffy. Peter’s chest tightened at the sight. He’d loved Jessie for years, always keeping those feelings tucked away. Now, after everything, they were finally together. He couldn’t help wondering if maybe he’d been too hard on her.

Peter stepped closer and gently took her hand, his voice softer than she’d ever heard it. “Jessie, don’t stay mad at me, okay? Today was our wedding. We should be celebrating. You wouldn’t want me spending our wedding night alone, would you?”

Jessie’s cheeks flamed as she caught his meaning. They’d both been dancing around their feelings for so long, but they’d never actually crossed that line.

“Peter, you’re not mad at me anymore?” Her voice was quiet, almost shy, as she took a small step back.

Peter just pulled her into a hug, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “How could I ever be mad at you? If anything, I’m sorry I didn’t give you the perfect wedding you deserve. But Jessie, I promise I’ll make it up to you. I’ll treat you right from now on.”

It wasn’t the grandest apology, but Jessie took it for what it was. She let out a breath, feeling the tension leave her shoulders.

“I messed up too,” she admitted. “I was just so upset. But Peter, I wasn’t mad at you. Before the wedding, I invited Eleanor, but she said she wouldn’t come. I just… I didn’t know what to do when she showed up anyway.”

Honestly, who wasn’t caught off guard today? If anyone was thrown for a loop, it was Peter.

“I get it. I really do.”

He knew exactly what Eleanor had been up to. She’d shown up with Max on purpose, just to get back at him, to hurt him. Peter almost wanted to laugh. So what if Max was successful and admired? In the end, he was just a stand-in. Peter was sure that Eleanor still loved him most.

“Come on, let’s go home. Mom and Olga are waiting for us.”
