The room went silent the moment he spoke. Everyone just kind of froze.
Eleanor hadn’t expected to run into her new boss here, of all places. Jessie and Peter were just as startled, completely thrown off by this guy’s intense vibe.
Max had been living overseas for years and only came back this year to officially take over Clarkson Corporation. Besides the upper management and the actual Clarkson family, hardly anyone had ever met him. He never showed up at press events or talked to the media, so it made sense that Jessie and Peter didn’t recognize him.
Olga, on the other hand, didn’t care who he was. Being called rude just set her off. She clenched her tiny fists and went straight for Max’s knees.
Eleanor quickly got between them and snapped, “Olga, who told you it’s okay to hit people?”
It sounded like a scolding, but really, she was just trying to shield her daughter. No one knew how the legendary head of Clarkson Corporation would react to getting smacked by a little kid.
Olga couldn’t take being yelled at by everyone. Her lips wobbled and then she just let loose, crying at the top of her lungs.
“Mommy, you’re so mean! You and the bad man are ganging up on me!”
Jessie hurried over and scooped Olga into her arms. “Hey, Olga, it’s okay, don’t cry. If you cry, your daddy and I both feel sad.”
Peter frowned and stepped closer. “Eleanor, you’re scaring her.”
With her backup in place, Olga went all in. She plopped down on the floor and started wailing, “Mommy, take off that dress! I don’t want you wearing it! Mommie Jessie would look a million times better than you anyway!”
The salesgirl’s eyes went huge. She hadn’t expected this kind of soap opera in the store. So, Ms. Stansel’s friend was the girl’s mom? But the kid seemed to hate her mom and only wanted Ms. Goff.
Peter’s head was pounding from all the screaming. He stared at Eleanor, cold as ice. “Are you going to take it off or not? How long are you going to let her keep this up?”
The salesgirl finally made a decision. “Ms. Rolland, maybe you should change out of the dress?”
Max gave a slow, drawn-out, “Oh, aunt…”
Peter started to say something, but Olga shot up from the floor and rushed at Max.
“You’re the mean one! Don’t pick on my Mommie Jessie!”
She huffed and puffed. “I’m the one who doesn’t want my mom anymore! Mommie Jessie is going to marry my dad!”
The other shoppers watching nearby were definitely getting their daily dose of drama. Now they were sure they were witnessing some real-life love triangle mess.
Max easily picked up Olga by the back of her dress. “I’ve seen a lot of troublemakers, but this is the first time I’ve seen a kid so eager to pick out her own stepmom.”
Olga, who’d never lost a fight in her life, was actually scared of him. For the first time, she didn’t know what to do.
