Yolanda was about to go with Eleanor, but Eleanor stopped her.
“I’ll call Max. Yolanda, don’t worry. Just go home and get some rest.”
Yolanda’s face was full of worry. “Eleanor, but the wedding is tomorrow. Are we still going through with it?”
Eleanor’s eyes turned somber. She couldn’t even think that far ahead right now.
“For now, everything stays the same.”
Whether that would actually happen depended on what was going on with Jared. She couldn’t afford to be careless. On the way over, Eleanor called Max to fill him in.
When she got to the old apartment, Eleanor found her mom sitting in the living room, hair a mess, looking totally lost. Eleanor frowned.
“Did you call the police? Did you look around the neighborhood?”
At the word “police,” Juliana jumped, almost panicking. “No, we can’t call the police!”
“Eleanor, someone kidnapped Jared! They said to bring a million in cash. Please, come with me. If we call the police, Jared will never come back.”
“Who told you that? Did the kidnappers call?”
“Text message!” Juliana held out her phone. “Look, I’m not lying.”
Eleanor studied her mom. There were tear stains on her cheeks and her slippers were on the wrong feet. She didn’t look like she was faking. Eleanor was only half convinced, but that was enough for now.
“Did you mention me to anyone?”
Eleanor figured if Jared was kidnapped, there was a good chance it was because of her.
Juliana shook her head, clearly confused. “No. Sometimes the neighbors ask why you haven’t been back in a while, but that’s all. No one else knows anything…” Besides, their place was right next to Jared’s high school.
