From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 304

Juliana sat on the edge of the bed, staring into space, her arms wrapped around her son’s backpack as she cried.

Eleanor stood quietly by the window, looking out at the moon spilling silver across the sky. “I’m sorry. Looks like we’ll have to put the wedding off for now.”

Max walked over and slipped his arm around her waist, his voice barely above a whisper. “Do you trust me?”

“If you do, I promise everything will go smoothly tomorrow. We’ll get married, just like we planned.”

Eleanor wasn’t sure she believed it herself. The day ahead felt unpredictable, but Max sounded so certain. She gave him a tired smile. “Okay. I trust you.”

Since Eleanor was staying in this old, cramped apartment, Max stayed too. Downstairs, a police van kept watch, and two detectives with guns were stationed inside. The place was crowded, tense, but safe enough for now.

Eleanor and Max squeezed onto Jared’s narrow bed, barely enough room for the two of them.

Sometime after midnight, Max woke to find his shirt damp. He looked down and saw Eleanor, still asleep, tears slipping quietly from the corners of her eyes. Even in her dreams, she couldn’t hold it together. Max’s chest ached for her. He started humming a lullaby he remembered Hunter singing to Katie, his voice soft as he gently patted Eleanor’s back. Slowly, he felt her breathing even out, the tension in her face fading as she drifted into a deeper sleep.

It didn’t last long. Juliana’s frantic knocking shattered the quiet.

“Eleanor, the kidnappers just messaged again!”

Eleanor jolted awake, confused and disoriented. “Who’s calling me?”

Max helped her with her clothes, his voice calm. “It’s okay. Take your time.”

Her hair was a mess, eyes red with leftover tears, but she grabbed a coat and went to open the door for Juliana.

“Eleanor, they want us at this address at six in the morning to deliver the ransom!”
