Eleanor took a deep breath and started the car, following the GPS. Juliana was in the passenger seat, muttering non-stop, getting on Eleanor’s last nerve.
“Can you please be quiet?” Eleanor said, her patience running thin.
If Juliana kept up this sobbing and complaining, she was going to mess everything up.
“I know you think I’m annoying, but I can’t help it. Jared’s just so unlucky. First he’s sick, now this… What did we do to deserve any of this?”
Eleanor ignored her, eyes on the road, doing everything she could to keep calm. This wasn’t the time to panic.
Juliana kept crying, but when she realized Eleanor wasn’t going to respond, she finally quieted down.
An hour passed. They were still about sixty kilometers from their destination when Juliana suddenly shrieked again.
“Eleanor, the kidnapper just messaged! He changed the drop-off. He wants us out of the car now!”
Eleanor pulled over, switched on the hazard lights, and checked the phone. She spoke quietly to the police through the listening device in her collar. “We’re getting out now.” The police were still a couple kilometers away, and there was no backup at this new location. They were on their own.
A call came in from an anonymous number. “Get out. Walk straight into the trees. See that warehouse? Go there. Stop in front.”
Eleanor kept her voice steady. “I want to hear Jared’s voice first.”
“He’s sleeping. Check your messages.”
The call ended. Seconds later, a picture arrived. Jared was tied up, blindfolded, duct tape over his mouth.
Juliana took one look and burst into tears again. Eleanor snapped, “Enough. Wipe your face, get out, and grab the money from the trunk. Pull yourself together.”
Juliana stumbled after her, clutching one of the cash-filled bags. “I’m scared. What if they kill him?”
