From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 317

Eleanor yanked her hand back, a little too forceful, and glanced behind her with a flutter of nerves. Luckily, nobody seemed to notice what was going on.

She pulled out her phone and shot off a text to Max.

[Eleanor: Mr. Clarkson, you’re such a liar.]

Max replied at his own lazy pace.

[Max: I didn’t lie. You never asked if I was coming, so how is that lying?]

Eleanor huffed. He was impossible, always twisting things to his advantage.

She put in her wired headphones, determined to tune him out, listen to some music, and maybe sneak in a nap on the way.

Of course, Max had other ideas. He reached over, poking her in the side. She jumped, scooting away, stifling a laugh at the ticklish spot.

“What are you doing?” she whispered, trying to keep her voice low.

Max just pointed at her headphones, silently asking for a share.

Not a chance. She shook her head, so he started lightly dragging his pinky across her palm, back and forth, again and again. It was ridiculous how persistent he could be. Finally, she caved and handed him one earbud.

This was supposed to be a marriage of convenience. When did he get so clingy?

Eleanor’s playlist was pure chaos. The first song blasted so hard Max nearly winced out loud.

He never would have guessed she was into this kind of music. The heavy rock beat thumped in his skull, threatening a headache.

He wanted to ask her to change it, but when he looked over, she was already nodding off, head tilted, breathing slow and peaceful.

Max grinned, a little helpless, a little smitten. If she could sleep through this, she must really be tired.

With the extra legroom up front, Eleanor slept like a baby. The gentle rumble of the bus almost felt like floating on a boat, drifting and rocking with the current.

She had no idea how long she’d been out, but suddenly it felt like the bus—or boat—had stopped. She blinked awake and realized she was leaning on Max’s shoulder. Around her, coworkers were trying way too hard to communicate with their eyes.
