Eleanor picked at her dinner, barely touching her favorite foods. No matter what the housekeeper cooked, she just couldn’t shake this strange heaviness in her chest. Nothing tasted right and she felt off in a way she couldn’t explain.
She slipped away to her room, curling up on the bed. When Max came home and saw the untouched dishes, his brows knit together. “Where’s Eleanor?”
The housekeeper looked worried. “Mr. Clarkson, I think Eleanor’s not feeling well. She went to lie down.”
Max didn’t waste a second. He headed straight for the bedroom and sat down on the edge of the bed, watching her with concern. “Eleanor? Can you hear me?”
She let out a low hum, eyes shut tight, her brow creased.
“Are you sick? Should we go to the hospital?”
Eleanor shook her head. “No, I’m fine. I just want to sleep for a bit.”
“Don’t bother me. I need some rest.”
Max almost laughed, but he was too worried. He poured her a glass of warm water and set it on the nightstand, then stepped out onto the balcony to make a call.
“She says her heart just feels… off. No other symptoms,” he said into the phone.
On the other end, Shawn Crane sounded skeptical. “She’s probably just exhausted. Or maybe get some bloodwork done at the hospital?”
“Isn’t there anything you can do to help her feel better now?”
Shawn sighed. “Max, I’m a doctor, not a miracle worker.”
“Fine. I’ll come over and check on her myself, okay?”
Shawn couldn’t help but smile at how Max dropped everything for Eleanor, treating his friends like on-call staff whenever his wife needed something.
By the time Shawn arrived, it was almost nine. Max greeted him at the door.
“Took you long enough. Did your car break down?”
Shawn just pressed his lips together and walked in, medical bag in hand. He hadn’t imagined he’d end up doing house calls like some old-fashioned family doctor.
He pulled out his stethoscope and a portable monitor. “Vitals are all good. Blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, lungs, everything’s normal. No bloating either.”
He looked at Eleanor thoughtfully. “Could it be her period? Sometimes that wipes people out.”
