As soon as Max walked in with Eleanor, George’s stern look melted away and he broke into a huge smile.

“Eleanor, you’re back.”

“Hi, Dad,” Eleanor said sweetly.

Max just rolled his eyes. It was like his dad didn’t even notice him.

Marleigh had just woken up from her nap and couldn’t have been more excited. She pulled Eleanor over to sit with her. “Eleanor, I swear you look skinnier every time I see you.”

Katie wandered downstairs, stretching and yawning. She glanced at Eleanor, pressed her lips together, but still managed a polite, “Max. Eleanor.”

Max’s warnings had finally gotten through to Katie. Even when Jessie Goff came to her about the company, she hadn’t said a word to their dad or to Max. Their dad always told her Max never went after anyone without a reason, so now Katie figured there must’ve been a good reason for what happened with Goff Inc. and Peter Clarkson’s company. These days she was working in HR at a different branch, and barely spoke to Jessie at all.

“Hey,” Max said, his tone casual.

“Mom, Dad, I have something to tell you.”

The room got quiet, everyone looking at Max, waiting to hear what was so important.

George blinked at him. “Is this about what you’ve been up to with Goff Inc. and the Clarksons?”

“Handle it however you want. I’m too old to get mixed up in your little fights.”

Max laughed. “Dad, come on. If it was just some little fight, do you really think I’d call a family meeting over it?”
