Their relationship barely lasted a year.
Linden’s gaze grew serious. “So if he was such a catch, did he break up with you?”
Yolanda scoffed, “No way.”
She turned her head, looking out at the city rolling by outside the window. “I broke up with him.”
She could never forget that day, back in her freshman year. In the hospital room, a pale, sickly woman had held her hand and said, “You’re a good kid. I know Jordan likes you, but he’s got a chance to study abroad now. I hope you two can break up.”
“His dad’s finally willing to take him back. I won’t be his burden anymore, and he’s worked so hard to get here. You’re amazing too, but Jordan deserves a bigger world.”
“Please, don’t hold him back. I’m begging you.”
Yolanda walked out of the hospital that day, not even sure what she was feeling.
Jordan Gates never knew she was from the Stansel family, and his mom had no idea either.
But those words—don’t hold him back—hit her right in her pride.
She found Jordan at a student council meeting, standing way too close to some girl. That was the last straw. On a rainy day, Yolanda ended things with him, her face completely blank.
Jordan left for another country the next week. After that, they didn’t see each other until the last class reunion.
“Hey!” Linden interrupted her memories. “You’re sitting in my car, thinking about your ex? Isn’t that a little rude?”
Yolanda turned to look at him. Linden pulled over, unbuckled his seatbelt, leaned in, and kissed her.
It was soft, almost gentle. But there was something about the way he kissed her, like he wanted to leave a mark, to make sure she knew she was his.
Yolanda felt her heart racing and quickly pushed him away.
“What was that? We were just talking, and now you’re being all handsy.”
Linden leaned in and stole another quick kiss. “I’m your husband. How is a husband kissing his wife being handsy?”
His eyes were darker now, his voice low and teasing. “Besides, babe, we’ve done way more than kiss, haven’t we?”
Yolanda was silent, caught off guard.
