They almost stepped in when Eleanor started arguing with Jessie Goff, but since she seemed fine, the bodyguards hung back. As soon as Adam showed up, though, both men went on high alert.

Adam threw a cold look her way. “You think you’re clever, don’t you?”

He glared at Eleanor. “If anything happens to my sister or her baby, I swear, I’ll make you pay.”

With his warning hanging in the air, Adam stormed off with Jessie Goff in tow.

Eleanor rolled her eyes at the drama, then glanced at the two bodyguards by her side. “Did Max send you to follow me?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

She nodded. “Good. Remember those two faces. If you ever see them come within two hundred meters of me, I want you to step in right away.”

What they didn’t know was that Eleanor was pregnant too. There was no way she’d let anyone get close enough to hurt her baby.

The bodyguards had expected her to be angry, but she looked perfectly calm. They both relaxed, letting out quiet sighs of relief.

When Max heard that Jessie Goff and Adam had come around to hassle Eleanor again, he completely lost it.

Otto looked like he was about to explode. “What did you two do this time? The Austin family just pulled out of buying our company. They said the Clarkson family warned everyone not to help us, or they’d become their enemy for life.”

That was it. The Goff family was officially done for.

Adam’s face changed, but he stood by his actions. “Dad, Eleanor was about to hurt Jessie’s baby. Was I supposed to do nothing?”

“I only said a couple of things,” Jessie added. “Does she have to be so touchy?”

Otto grabbed an ashtray and hurled it at Adam’s feet. “Touchy? If you’re so tough, why don’t you go after Max instead? You’re not a kid anymore. Can’t you control yourself?”

He shook his head, looking defeated. “It’s over. All we can do now is wait for bankruptcy.”

For a long moment, Otto just stared at the floor, as if he’d run through every possible plan but none of them mattered, not with these two messing everything up.

Meanwhile, Max looked at the test results from the lab and saw exactly what he’d expected.
