“Ow... babe, that hurts. Can you be a little more gentle?”

Yolanda just stared at him for a second. Was he trying to make this sound any more suggestive? Seriously.

When Max got home, Eleanor was still up.

Max leaned in and kissed her, slow and soft. She let out a little sound, half surprise, half pleasure. He didn’t stop there, letting his hand drift to her chest, fingers curving around her softness.

“I missed you, baby.”

“Mmm...” Eleanor’s eyes fluttered closed.

She felt small and safe in his arms, his lips covering hers with a heat that made her whole body tingle. By the time he finally let her go, five minutes must have passed, but it felt like just a heartbeat.

She was breathless, her heart pounding so loud she was sure he could hear it. Her cheeks burned, and she had to take a second to calm down.

Once she managed to catch her breath, Max’s face turned serious.

“Babe, I need to talk to you about something.”

Eleanor let out a lazy little noise, like a cat stretching in the sun. “Yeah? What is it?”

“It’s about Juliana.”

The name woke her up instantly, like someone had flipped a switch.

“What about her?”

Max took a deep breath. “I got a DNA sample. Compared it with yours. She’s not your real mom.”
