They barely made it a few steps before running into someone completely unexpected.

“Ana, is that you?” Paola’s voice trembled, her eyes shining with tears as she stared up at the figure walking down the steps toward her, backlit by the fading light. Leaning on her son for support, she hurried forward and grabbed Eleanor’s hand. “It’s really you, isn’t it, Ana?”

“My Shan-shan... Do you know how much I’ve missed you? Did you come to see Mom?”

Eleanor’s eyes were still red from crying, and as Paola mistook her for her own daughter, they filled up again. Her nose burned, and she could hardly speak.

Max glanced back at Samuel. “Does that work for you?”

Samuel was too shocked to find the right words. Something big was about to happen, he could just feel it.

“Mom, calm down. This isn’t Ana. This is Mrs. Clarkson.”

As soon as he said “Mrs. Clarkson,” Paola seemed to snap out of her daze.

“Eleanor?”

“Yes, it’s me.”

The happiness that had just filled Paola’s face melted away, replaced by disappointment, heavy and raw. A sadness settled in her eyes, deep and lingering. Ana had always been her favorite, the daughter she’d lost too soon. Even if the whole world forgot Ana, Paola never would.
