Otto spent a long time debating with himself before finally calling Eleanor.
Eleanor had just eaten and was lying down for a nap in Max’s lounge when her phone rang. She glanced at the unfamiliar number, frowning a little. “Hello?”
“Hi, Eleanor. It’s your father. Otto.”
The silence that followed felt endless. Listening to that heavy, unfamiliar voice, Eleanor couldn’t muster a single ounce of interest.
She knew Otto wasn’t the only one to blame. Adam, Jessie Goff, Wesley—they had all hurt her in their own ways. What stung most was that Jessie’s actions had always been quietly approved by the Goff family. Eleanor couldn’t just brush it all aside as if nothing had ever happened. She wasn’t that forgiving.
“I’m sorry,” Eleanor said, her voice steady and slow. “My father already passed away.”
She’d rather remember Benjamin, the honest, straightforward man who had given her a moment of real warmth, the kind of kindness Juliana never managed. She would rather call him her father. Even after finding out Jared wasn’t her real brother, thinking back on Juliana’s coldness just brought a dull ache. She didn’t regret anything she’d done for Jared though. He’d never done her any wrong.
Hearing her say, “My father already passed away,” hit Otto right in the chest.
“Eleanor, I’m so sorry for what we did to you. But,” his voice shook a little, “we had no idea you were family.”
Eleanor’s lips curled in a silent, bitter smile. “Whether you knew or not, none of that should have happened to me. Don’t you think so, Otto?”
He had no answer for that. “I’ll make it up to you. Please, just give me a chance.”
She shook her head, though he couldn’t see it. “I’m sorry.”
And this time, she hung up.
