Kristina heard about Autumn’s illness by chance and, half-laughing, decided to share the gossip with Eleanor.
Eleanor was genuinely surprised. When she’d last seen Peter Clarkson, his expression hadn’t given away that anything serious was happening at home. What confused her even more was that Autumn was always so careful about her health. With her heart and blood pressure issues, she had a family doctor checking her every week. With that kind of attention, how did something like a stroke even happen?
Then again, Eleanor realized she’d never know the full story, and honestly, it wasn’t her concern anymore.
“Eleanor, are you okay with me bringing this up?” Kristina asked, glancing over.
Eleanor smiled. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Kristina hesitated. “I just thought maybe you still hated… you know who. I mean, if he’d known you were actually our family’s daughter back then, maybe you guys wouldn’t have gotten divorced.”
Eleanor shook her head. “Kristina, if a man only stays with me because of who I am, is that really someone worth keeping?”
She took a breath. “The real problem with Peter was never my background. He just didn’t love me. I was always just a stand-in for Jessie Goff. But none of that matters now.”
“Do I hate him?” Eleanor looked off into the distance, thinking it over. “If you’d asked me two months ago, I would have said yes. I hated him.”
She smiled softly and touched her belly. “But now? I have someone much more important in my life. I’ve let go of all that.”
How could there be any hate left when there was no love?
Kristina noticed the gesture right away. “Wait, Eleanor… are you pregnant?”
Eleanor nodded, her eyes warm with happiness. “I didn’t say anything before because it was still early. I wanted to wait until I was past the first trimester.”
Kristina’s face lit up. “Oh my gosh, that’s amazing!” She playfully smacked her own cheeks. “Forget what I just said—that was such a dumb question. I have to tell Grandma. She’s going to be over the moon!”
Sure enough, as soon as Paola heard the news, she sent a car to bring them home. When they arrived, Paola called for the butler and had him haul out a heavy chest.
