Peter shot up from his chair, his expression dark and stormy. “Eleanor, haven’t I told you not to joke about the baby?”
“Be mad if you want, get jealous for all I care, but why do you always drag the baby into this?”
“Fifty million. You’ll take it, whether you want to or not. And I’ll throw in something else. I’ll help you find a bone marrow match for Jared as soon as possible.”
Eleanor narrowed her eyes, trying to figure out the man standing in front of her.
He was obviously in love with Jessie, so why did he care so much about the baby she was carrying? Did he want her to have the baby just so Jessie could play stepmom?
A cold, sarcastic smile curled on her lips. “Fine. Fifty million works for me.”
“But I want the bone marrow match within two months. If you don’t deliver, I can go online right now and say I made a mistake, but later on I can still say you paid me to lie. Peter, I’ve got more than one recording, you know.”
Peter clenched his jaw, grinding his teeth. “Deal.”
“And by the way, keep your check. Have the money wired to the account I tell you to, and make sure the memo says it’s a voluntary gift.”
If the money ended up in her own account, it would still count as joint property. But if Peter wired it straight to Jared’s account, it would have nothing to do with her.
She knew he’d show up today, trying to sweep everything under the rug with money. And honestly, money was all Eleanor wanted right now.
She never thought one recording would be enough to take Jessie down. That kind of gossip would trend online for a while, then fade away after a year or two. No one would remember.
Jared’s health was worth way more than Jessie’s reputation.
“Eleanor, why did you even bother clearing things up? If you’d just left it alone, the netizens would have torn Jessie apart.”
Eleanor grinned. “It’s not that simple. Don’t worry, I didn’t lose anything. I never thought this would actually bring her down. I just wanted some cash.”
“He gave me fifty million, and promised to find Jared a bone marrow match within two months.”
At the mention of Jared, Yolanda sighed. “Hey, Jared’s going to be okay. I know it.”
“Oh, and did you hear what Max did yesterday? He totally called out that awful couple. I loved it. I always thought he was just cold and distant, but he’s actually got a sense of justice.”
“Also, Eleanor, did you know Max is Peter’s uncle? Well, not really close, but Peter’s grandfather was actually an illegitimate son from the Clarkson family. My mom just told me about it yesterday.”
