Eleanor showed up at the Clarkson Corporation’s HR department right at nine in the morning.
“Hey there, sweetheart, can you fill out this onboarding form for me?” the HR manager asked, handing her a clipboard with a friendly smile.
Eleanor took the form, settling into a chair to fill it out carefully. Across the room, someone elbowed the HR supervisor.
“Mia, which department is the new girl from? She’s really pretty.”
Mia grinned. “She’s with the research and development lab. Super smart, too. She nailed her interview on the first try.”
“No way, I thought for sure she’d be in PR. With that hair, you’d never guess she’s a scientist.”
“Yeah, well, Mr. Clarkson interviewed her himself. That should tell you something.”
When Eleanor got to the marital status section of the form, she wrote “Divorced” without a second thought. For her emergency contact, she put down Yolanda’s number.
It hit her as she was writing. She had a husband, a child, and a mother, but when it came to someone she could count on in an emergency, the only name she could think to list was her best friend.
Once she finished, she handed the form, along with her diplomas and technical certificates, to Mia.
Mia’s eyes flickered when she saw “Divorced” on the form. “Alright, just hang tight for a minute. I’ll make copies of these, then I’ll take you over to the lab. It’s not in this building, they’ve got their own place.”
Eleanor smiled. “Thanks, I appreciate it.”
While Mia was at the copier, the HR associate director, Katie, came by. “Mia, we need to set up an employee training session for next week. Make sure everyone gets the memo.”
Katie glanced at what Mia was copying. “You’re handling all the paperwork yourself now?”
Mia quickly replied, “Just for the bio research hires. Company policy says their files are confidential, so I’m the only one allowed to process them.”
Katie nodded, not saying anything else, but glanced again at Eleanor’s profile. She was striking, even from the side.
When they took the elevator to the lab building, Eleanor didn’t expect to run into Hunter, who was on his way to a meeting on the twentieth floor.
“Good morning, Mr. Clarkson,” Mia greeted him.
Eleanor echoed the greeting, though she couldn’t help but wonder how many Mr. Clarksons actually worked here.
Hunter nodded back, then turned to talk to his assistant about his schedule. When they reached the twentieth floor, he got off.
Mia hit the close button and turned to Eleanor. “That was one of our Mr. Clarksons. Hunter. He’s the CEO’s older brother.”
Eleanor nodded, her mind elsewhere. Wait, so that guy was Max’s brother?
