From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 44

Katie couldn’t help but pout. “That’s exactly why I came to ask. I was worried you might make a mistake, so I figured I’d give you a little heads-up. I heard Eleanor used to be a secretary. What makes her qualified to work at Clarkson Corporation?”

Billy was already fed up with Katie poking her nose into his business. His expression turned cold. “If you have any issues, Ms. Clarkson, you can take them up with the CEO. I have things to do, so if you’ll excuse me.”

Katie’s face went red, then pale, as she stormed off in a huff.

Eleanor was deep in her work when she suddenly noticed someone glaring her way. She looked up, puzzled, wondering what she could have possibly done wrong.

Max had just gotten back to the office when his niece barged in, looking absolutely furious.

“Katie, is this about work?” Max asked. He never discussed personal matters at the office, and everyone in the Clarkson family knew that. So he just assumed Katie was there for something official.

“Max, did you know Billy used his connections to sneak in someone who knows nothing about R&D?”

Max’s eyes narrowed. “Really? Who is it?”

“Eleanor. She’s pretty, sure, but she doesn’t look like someone who belongs in research.”

Max shrugged off his jacket onto a chair and leaned back, his eyes sharp. “Katie, since when do you judge people by how they look?”

Katie hesitated, searching for words. “Max, I…”

He didn’t let her finish. “I’ve said it before. No one interferes with the R&D department. Are you trying to be the one who breaks that rule?”

Katie’s heart skipped a beat. She knew that look. Max was mad.

“Max, that’s not what I meant…”

“I personally handle all the interviews for R&D. Are you questioning my judgment? If not, go back to your office. Now.”

Hunter laughed. “Alright, I know what to tell him.”

Eleanor had no clue she’d just ended up on Katie’s bad side. As she packed up to leave that evening, she noticed her director eyeing her in a way that made her uneasy.

“Director, is there something on my face?”

Billy shook his head. “No, nothing. Just keep doing your best.”

Eleanor walked out of the office, more confused than ever. She had barely stepped outside when her phone buzzed with a text from Peter.

Pick up the phone. Our daughter’s in the hospital.
