From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 56

Autumn climbed the stairs, her face full of worry as she glanced at her son. “Peter, are you looking for something?”

Peter snapped out of his thoughts. “No, Mom. Why are you still up?”

Autumn sat at the edge of his bed. “Come here, Peter. It’s just the two of us tonight. We haven’t really talked in ages.”

She paused, watching him closely. “Eleanor still won’t come home. Has she really given up on you?” Autumn acted like the divorce papers didn’t exist, choosing to ignore them for now. She’d hidden them on purpose, just to buy more time, hoping that even if the two of them were headed for a breakup, it would at least happen slowly.

Peter frowned, his voice low. “No, Mom. She’s just pregnant and a little emotional. Don’t worry, she’ll be back soon. She’s just staying at her parents’ place for now.”

Autumn let out a breath, feeling a bit more at ease.

“Alright, but I should remind you about something. Did you comfort Jessie at the hospital last time? Remember, you’re her brother-in-law. People talk, and some things get twisted into ugly rumors,” she said seriously.

“Peter, our family still isn’t fully accepted by the main branch. We have to be extra careful, with everything we do. We can’t let anyone catch us slipping. Do you get what I’m saying?”

Autumn had always favored her oldest son, Grady, but now that he was gone, all her hopes rested on Peter. She wanted to say these things, but she tried to keep her voice gentle, not wanting to hurt their relationship.

Peter’s gaze flickered. “I know, Mom.”

He couldn’t deny it. With Eleanor gone, he’d been spending a little too much time around Jessie. Thinking about his blood relatives at Clarkson Corporation made something burn inside him. He remembered how his mom had always preferred Grady, and you could see it in the way she treated their wives. But even Grady, who his mom never stopped bragging about, couldn’t win over the main family. If Peter could do it, wouldn’t that mean he was better than his brother? Still, there was no way he’d ever say that out loud.

After warning her son, Autumn made up her mind to visit the hospital the next day. She had Lisa prepare some food early in the morning, then took it herself.

When Olga saw her grandmother walk in, her eyes went wide with excitement. “Grandma! You finally came!”

“Ma’am, please calm down. I’ll check right now.”

“What did you just call me? Do you even know how to talk to people?”

Autumn had always thought she looked young for her age. This nurse was barely in her twenties. How could she call her grandma?

The head nurse’s face turned red as she tried to keep her cool. “Ma’am, please. I’ll go ask and come right back, alright?”

Autumn waved her off impatiently. “Go already. You’ve been standing here talking, and you still haven’t found out anything.”

Every word out of her mouth hit a nerve with the staff, pushing all the wrong buttons.
