The last nurse to enter carried herself with more confidence than the others. Her family had some connections, so she didn’t seem intimidated at all.
“What’s going on here? I’m the one who gave the little girl her shot yesterday.”
Autumn, already frustrated, snapped right back. “Look at my granddaughter’s hand. Do you think all those bruises are normal? If you can’t do your job properly, maybe you should practice more before using my granddaughter as a test subject.”
The young nurse bristled. “Excuse me, but we give the shots. Afterward, it’s up to the child or their family to put pressure on the spot. I told her guardian already. If you didn’t do it right, why are you blaming me?”
Autumn planted her hands on her hips. “Which family member did you tell? Go on, show me.”
Right then, Jessie walked in.
“There. That’s her,” the nurse said, pointing at Jessie.
The nurse turned to Jessie, her tone sharp. “Can’t your family handle something this simple? Has your child never had a shot before? Aren’t you the mom? Weren’t you supposed to handle it?”
Jessie had just walked in and was immediately put on the spot. She felt her cheeks burn. “What’s your name? With that kind of attitude, I’m going to file a complaint.”
The nurse just rolled her eyes. “Go ahead. Seriously, I’ve had enough of this job anyway. File your complaint and maybe they’ll fire me. I’d love to get my severance pay.”
Jessie was so angry she could barely speak. “You—”
Autumn was annoyed at the nurse, but honestly, she was a little frustrated with Jessie too. How hard was it to press a hand to a little bruise?
The head nurse hurried over and pulled the young nurse away, finally ending the argument.
Jessie turned to Autumn, voice soft with guilt. “Mom, I’m sorry. This is all my fault. I let Olga get hurt.”
Olga, trying to be brave, piped up, “It’s okay, Mommie Jessie. I don’t feel a thing. See?”
Autumn’s eyes narrowed. “Olga, what did you just call your aunt?”
Peter put down his paperwork and looked at her. “Jessie, Mom’s just tired from taking care of Olga. Try not to read too much into it.”
He paused, remembering what his mother had told him. “Jessie, from now on, let’s just talk about work when we’re at the office. People gossip. You know how it is, right?”
Jessie had never been treated like this before. It stung. “Peter, are you falling out of love with me?”
“Didn’t you say you cared for me more than your brother ever did?”
Peter looked down. “I remember, Jessie. But Grady’s only been gone for two months.”
Jessie bit her lip, seeing how firm he was. Even though she didn’t want to back down, she had no choice. “I understand.”
Eleanor, meanwhile, had been enjoying a few peaceful days. She thought Peter had finally moved on. On Friday, she took the day off work and went to court.
