“Would you like some tea?” Daniel asked.
Eleanor shook her head. “Don’t worry about me, Dr. Bates. Water is fine.”
Daniel grabbed a bottle of mineral water from the cabinet below and set it in front of her. Then he took a seat across from her.
“So, Eleanor, tell me. Why are you getting a divorce?”
The question caught her off guard. She immediately thought of Max, who’d been with her that day. Had he said something? But how would Daniel even know?
“Don’t overthink it,” Daniel said, almost reading her mind. “I shamelessly asked Mr. Clarkson for your employee file. It said ‘divorced’ right there.”
Eleanor gave a small, bitter smile. “You saw that, huh? Well, it’s not official yet. I’ve filed the paperwork. Just waiting on the court date to see what the judge decides.”
She was clearly set on going through with it.
Daniel let out a sigh. “Eleanor, you once risked making your professor angry, left your lab right after getting married, and followed your husband into his company. How did it come to this?”
He remembered, clear as day, that she’d been pregnant at the time.
“You two have a kid, don’t you?”
Eleanor smiled, but there was no joy in it. “Yeah. A daughter. She’s four now. After the divorce, I’m not planning to take her. Her dad will have custody.”
“My professor was right all those years ago. He really wasn’t someone worth trusting with the rest of my life.”
Women in love so often lose their sense of judgment. Eleanor had been just like that, so sure of her feelings that she’d convinced herself Peter loved her too. She never realized she was just a stand-in for someone else. And for the chance to be that substitute, she gave up so much without a second thought.
She only saw the truth now. Was it too late? Maybe a little, but not completely.
“Dr. Bates, all I want now is to focus on work. I’m done with relationships.”
“I’d rather sell my patent to a dog than let him get his hands on it.”
Eleanor smiled for the first time all afternoon. “Thank you.”
“Your professor doesn’t know you’re here today,” Daniel said with a mischievous grin. “I wanted to surprise that old man. He’ll regret it when he finds out.”
Just then, a deep, familiar voice echoed from the doorway. “Daniel, what are you trying to surprise me with this time?”
Eleanor’s eyes stung with tears as soon as she heard it.
Tim hadn’t planned on coming. He’d spent all night tossing and turning, suspicious that Daniel was up to something behind his back. The two of them had known each other for years. In the end, he told his driver to take him over.
When Tim walked in, hands behind his back, his steps still strong and steady, he saw a face he hadn’t seen in so long. His sharp eyes widened with shock, and he heard her voice, shaky with emotion.
“Tim… you’re here.”
