Tim spat, but then his voice softened. “How’s everything going with the divorce? Any idea when it’ll be over?”
“It’s only just been filed. The court date could take a while. Divorce cases always move at a snail’s pace.”
“Who says they can drag it out like this? Hold on, I’m calling my eldest son.”
Tim grumbled under his breath as he left to make the call. Daniel just smiled. “Tim’s oldest works at the courthouse. He can help speed things up.”
Eleanor felt this gentle warmth in her chest. Honestly, she could have had a good life if she wanted. Instead, she chose the mess that love left her in.
“Thank you, Dr. Bates.”
She knew she wouldn’t have had the courage to see Tim if Daniel hadn’t come with her.
Daniel just shrugged, easygoing as always. “It’s nothing. I know you’re a sore spot for Tim. He always had big hopes for you. Ever think about coming back?”
Tim walked back in just then, phone in hand. “No need to come back. Clarkson Corporation is a solid place. You’ll grow more there than staying with me.” He shot her a reassuring look. “The summons should be out in two months. Just hang in there.”
Eleanor’s eyes stung. “Tim…”
He waved her off gently. “Listen, I’m not just talking out of anger. Clarkson’s top-tier, with the best resources. You’ll do fine there. If you have time, come visit. If you run into tough problems, come talk to us.”
“Tim, I really don’t know how to thank you.”
He let out a long sigh. “I know I said some harsh things before. You’re my student, but honestly, you’re more like a daughter to me. When you got married and chose family, I get it now. But that doesn’t mean they get to treat you badly.”
“Eleanor, remember, you’ll always have people backing you up here.”
That was it. Eleanor couldn’t hold back anymore. Tears flowed down her face and she didn’t even try to stop them.
They finished lunch together. It wasn’t until late afternoon that she finally left.
The student looked surprised to see her. “Oh, you didn’t catch Dr. Bates?”
“He left around four thirty. Said he had something to do.”
Jessie’s smile faded. She clenched her teeth. “Didn’t you say you’d tell me when he was free?”
“We get really busy with experiments. It’s easy to lose track of time. You were in your car, didn’t you see him leave?”
“Maybe just come back tomorrow.”
The student shut the door, not bothering to hide his impatience.
Jessie bit her lip so hard it hurt, but she swallowed her frustration.
For Peter’s company, she would put up with anything.
