From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 69

Billy walked Dr. Bates out of the office, grinning. “Dr. Bates, I hope we get to work together again.”

Dr. Bates let out a low chuckle. “I’m sure we will. Have you heard of Dr. Hawthorn? He’s making waves in targeted cancer research. Who knows, maybe he’ll come find you one day.”

Billy’s eyes lit up. “Really? You mean it, Dr. Bates?”

“Of course. You’ve got something he wants, after all.”

Billy blinked. “Sorry, I’m not following.”

Dr. Bates gave him a knowing look. “You’ve hired a real gem. Tim’s top student is working for you now.”

It finally clicked—he was talking about Eleanor. Billy hadn’t realized how impressive she really was.

He went straight back to the lab and handed the new project over to Eleanor to lead.

Eleanor was caught off guard but guessed that Dr. Bates must have put in a good word for her, knowing how protective he could be.

“Thank you, Billy. I’ll give it everything I’ve got.”

“Great. You can pick your own team, just let me know who you want once they agree.”

Suddenly, a few coworkers started eyeing Eleanor with a new sense of excitement.

“Peter, are you sure Dr. Bates is coming tonight?” Jessie asked, a little anxious.

Peter patted her hand. “Relax. I even talked to their university president about this. There’s no way Daniel can say no.”

Daniel had just handed over his patent to Eleanor’s company that morning. By evening, the university president called him in for dinner. He more or less knew what was going on, but still, when he opened the door to the private dining room and saw the guy who’d messed with Eleanor, he stopped in his tracks.

“Mr. Urban, looks like you’ve already got company. I’ll head out.”

“Dr. Bates, she just speaks her mind. Please don’t take it the wrong way.”

Dr. Bates looked at the two of them, hiding an eye roll. “Miss, do we even know each other? If you’ve got a problem with what Indy said, you should take it up with him.”

Jessie tried to smile. “That’s not what I meant, Dr. Bates.”

“I head up our R&D team,” she added, glancing at Peter, hoping he’d rein it in. Out of nowhere, she blurted, “And I’m Mr. Clarkson’s girlfriend.”

Peter’s stomach dropped. He had a really bad feeling about this.

The next second, Dr. Bates’s eyes narrowed. He smirked, “Girlfriend, huh? Mr. Clarkson, you’re still married and already chasing after someone new?”

He stood up, brushing off his jacket. “Mr. Urban, I don’t think I can accept your dinner invitations anymore. Why would you put me at the same table as someone’s mistress?”

He marched out without looking back.
