The real reason Marleigh couldn’t sleep was all because her son refused to settle down and get married.
A while back, Max’s grandfather, George, tried to trick him into getting a physical. He wanted to figure out if Max’s problem was some medical issue or something else entirely. Max saw right through it. Instead of going along, he tossed a fertility report on the table in front of George, basically saying, “Here’s your answer.” George nearly fainted from shock.
Now Max was thirty-three. Even his niece was old enough to think about marriage, but Max was still happily single, not bothered at all. No wonder Marleigh was anxious.
Autumn had no idea what was really keeping Marleigh up at night. She walked over, calm and steady, ready to help.
Katie made the introductions. “Grandma, you’ve already met my best friend, Jessie. And this is her mother-in-law, Ms. Clove.”
Marleigh gave a polite, warm nod.
“Ms. Clove,” Katie said, “my grandma’s been having trouble sleeping. It’s not that she can’t fall asleep, she just can’t seem to make it through the whole night.”
“I understand, Marleigh,” Autumn replied. “If you have a moment, maybe we could find somewhere quiet so I can check your pulse.”
Marleigh smiled. “Of course.”
Katie led them to a lounge they’d set up earlier. Autumn took Marleigh’s wrist, her face turning serious as she focused.
“Marleigh, you’ve got a bit of coldness in your system, but overall, you’re in good shape. Trouble sleeping could be about organ function, some imbalance, or maybe something from the outside. But honestly, after checking your pulse, nothing jumps out at me. Maybe it’s your mood?”
Marleigh hadn’t thought much of this checkup, but now she looked at Autumn with fresh respect.
“Oh?” She smiled, intrigued. “Go on, Dr. Clove.”
“Jessie, that really was Marleigh, right?”
Jessie squeezed her mom’s hand. “That’s her, Mom. I’ve heard George pretty much listens to whatever she says.”
The message was clear. If they could win Marleigh over, earning the Clarkson family’s approval wouldn’t be far behind.
The next day, Eleanor still felt like she needed to move. She wanted a new place, even though Yolanda’s apartment had great security. The problem was, Peter still managed to get in, probably because he was also an owner in the building.
When she mentioned to a coworker that she was looking for a new place, he was surprised. “You want top-notch security? Whitehaven Commons is already super secure. Anything better than that, most places aren’t even up for rent.”
