A memory of betrayal flickered through Peter’s mind. He couldn’t take it anymore. He reached out, tilting Eleanor’s chin up, and tried to kiss her.
Eleanor pushed him away with everything she had. The man she used to hold so close now made her stomach turn. The nausea was overwhelming.
She stomped on his foot, hard, then twisted free and ran straight for the bathroom.
Peter hissed in pain, stumbling after her. He found her hunched over the toilet, dry heaving. His eyes went cold, darker than she’d ever seen.
Did his kiss really make her want to throw up?
When had she started looking at him like that, like he was disgusting?
A numb chill settled over him. He suddenly remembered she was pregnant. Forcing himself on her like that… what was he even thinking?
“Eleanor, I don’t have time for your drama. Forget about the divorce. It’s not happening.”
He couldn’t stand the thought of her raising their child with someone else. No way would he let another man become his kid’s stepdad.
“I know I messed up before. I’ll double your salary. You can have your old spot back in R&D. Just stop being so difficult, okay?”
Eleanor finished throwing up, her eyes red as she struggled to catch her breath. When she finally calmed down, she glanced back at the man standing in the doorway, so full of himself, and almost laughed out loud.
Seriously? Did he really think she still cared about a job in his company?
She straightened up and splashed cold water on her face.
Then she crossed her arms and looked him straight in the eye. “Peter, you need a reality check. I started working in Clarkson Corporation’s R&D department a month ago.”
Katie had done Jessie a big favor by arranging this. Marleigh hardly ever left the house, and only agreed to come because she’d been personally invited. The Clove family wanted to reconnect with the main branch, and if the men were getting nowhere, maybe the women had a better shot.
Autumn felt a spark of hope. “Alright. It’s been years since I practiced, but I still remember a few things.”
Wearing a gorgeous dress, Autumn arrived at the banquet with Jessie. She spotted Marleigh right away, surrounded by people—Katie’s grandmother, Max’s mother.
Katie saw her and waved, then grabbed her grandmother’s arm. “Grandma, didn’t you say you’ve been having trouble sleeping? This is my best friend Jessie. You remember her, right? Her mother-in-law is a specialist in traditional medicine. Maybe she could help you and write a prescription for your insomnia.”
Marleigh smiled warmly. “Katie, that’s very thoughtful. I’d be happy to meet her.”
After all, there was no reason not to accept her granddaughter’s introduction, especially when it came from genuine concern for her health.
