From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 84

“I know,” she said softly. “But this has nothing to do with me, either.”

They went back to their desks. It didn’t matter if they tried to keep working or not. That crack in their team was obvious now, even if nobody spoke about it.

Skyler poked them both in the group chat.

[Are you two alright?]

Five minutes went by. No one replied.

Eleanor stared at her screen, then finally typed back: [@Skyler, we’re fine.]

The heavy mood hung around for hours. No one really talked. At four, everyone in the research department got called to the big conference room. It was clear what the meeting was about—the accident in the lab yesterday.

No one expected the room to be this full, though. Not just their department head, but the HR director and Max himself were here, too.

Everyone’s nerves were on edge. People glanced at each other, wondering who was about to get in trouble.

Robert and Eleanor looked especially pale. Most people kept their distance, but there were a few curious glances, and some looks that seemed almost glad to see them squirm.

Billy took the lead. His voice was loud and serious. “You all know why we’re here. Yesterday’s incident in the fifth-floor lab is a huge deal. I want to remind everyone about our safety rules. And I have to call out those whose mistakes put the company at risk.”

His words sent a chill through the room.

“Let’s watch the security footage from yesterday.”

Eleanor’s hands tightened in her lap. This was it.

She watched as the video played. At 5:30, Skyler left the lab first. At 5:35, Eleanor followed. That left Robert alone.

Robert looked miserable. His face turned bright red. He really had just stepped out for a second. Who would’ve thought someone would take advantage of that tiny window?

“Billy, I thought it was just a few seconds. I didn’t think it mattered,” Robert said, his voice small.

Billy cut him off. “Do you remember the first rule for the lab? Every time you leave—even for a second—you lock the door.”

Robert nodded, eyes on the floor. “Yes. I remember.”

“These rules exist for a reason. You all had training when you joined, especially here in R&D. I don’t care if you’re just going to the bathroom or getting a drink, you always lock up.”

Billy’s stare was icy. He gave a short, sharp laugh and clicked back to the part of the video with the mysterious lab coat figure.

He looked around the room. “Who was that? You have one minute to come forward. If not, we’ll let the police handle it.”
