From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 85

Eleanor actually felt oddly calm now.

She furrowed her brows, following Billy’s gaze around the room, trying to figure out who wanted to set her up. It wasn’t Robert, and it definitely couldn’t be Skyler—he’d left ages ago. She barely even knew the rest of her coworkers. Who would bother sabotaging someone they hardly knew?

Her attention settled on a man sitting near the conference room door. He kept his head down, acting like he was somewhere else entirely. Maybe she stared too long, because suddenly he looked up. Their eyes met across the room. She vaguely remembered his name. Simon.

If anyone was paying attention to her, it had to be Max. He tapped his fingers on the table, just two quiet knocks, but the sound cut right through the tension. “Call the police.”

That was all it took for Simon to break. He finally spoke up, his voice louder than anyone expected. “It was me. I did it.”

Everyone turned to look at him in shock. Simon wasn’t the kind of person anyone would have suspected. He always looked so serious behind those thick glasses, rarely said a word, and was known for being good at his job. Why would he do something so reckless?

No one could make sense of it.

Max didn’t look surprised at all. His voice was cold. “Meeting’s over. Simon, stay here.”

Eleanor narrowed her eyes, studying Simon. She couldn’t figure out what she had done to make him go after her like this.

After the meeting, Skyler seemed relieved. “Eleanor, I’m so glad you’re okay. I was really worried about you two.”

Was it really okay, though? Robert shot Eleanor a long, meaningful look. Billy’s harsh words were still echoing in his head. He knew things weren’t fine. If nothing else, he was probably about to lose his performance bonus.

The conference room emptied out, leaving only Vera from HR, Billy, and Simon.

Billy looked at Simon, frowning. “Why did you throw the cigarette butt in there?”

Vera didn’t let it go. “It’s not just that. When you apply somewhere else, we’re not going to give you a good reference. Of course, if you actually tell us the whole truth, we’ll keep this to ourselves.”

Simon met her gaze, steady and unflinching. “I’ve got nothing more to say. That’s the truth.”

Max had run out of patience. He made the call. “Just follow the company’s process for this kind of thing. It’s over.”

With that, Simon lost any chance to change his story, even if he wanted to.

Eleanor knew the only reason she got through this mess was because of Max. If he hadn’t stepped in, Billy probably would have kicked her out on the spot.
