From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 88

When did Katie start using these kinds of sneaky tricks against her coworkers?

“Katie.” Hunter slammed his phone down on the table in front of her. His voice was ice cold. “Care to explain this?”

“It wasn’t me. You already figured out who did it, right? So why are you blaming me?” she protested, her voice shaky.

Max never accused anyone without proof. Katie had just been careless. He had pulled up the chat records from the company’s internal system. The IT team could access everything coworkers said to each other. Max was honestly surprised they’d be reckless enough to discuss something like this on the company network.

When all the printed chat logs landed in front of Katie, her words dried up. She just stared at the pages, silent.

Hunter’s expression darkened. He shot up from his seat. “This is ridiculous. Why would you go after a new hire?”

Max crossed his legs and let out a dry, almost sarcastic laugh. “Probably because that new girl doesn’t get along with Katie’s best friend. Katie just wanted to help her friend out, I guess.”

With everything out in the open, Katie’s eyes filled with tears. “Max, she’s not a good person. You should just fire her.”

The look Max gave her was colder than ever. There was something unnerving in his eyes now, enough to make even Hunter nervous.

“That’s enough, Katie,” Hunter said, his tone final. “You’re losing your salary for a year. No allowance from the family either. Take some time to think about what you’ve done. Don’t come back to work until you’ve sorted yourself out.”

Max had been ready to hand down his own punishment, but since Hunter stepped in, he didn’t press further.

“Katie, you’re my niece, but at work, you’re just another employee. Even if you are family, you can still get fired for messing up.”

Katie just stood there, stunned. She never thought Max would really come down on her like this. She’d been pampered her whole life. Now, humiliated and hurt, she turned and ran upstairs, tears streaming down her face.

Max let out a sigh and gave Hunter a small, apologetic smile. “Sorry, Hunter. I’m just doing my job.”

Once Max decided to leave, nobody could stop him. As the butler walked him to the garage, Max suddenly turned and asked, “Did anyone come by the house this afternoon?”

The butler looked nervous but answered honestly. “Yes, sir. Mrs. Marleigh hasn’t been sleeping well, so she invited a traditional medicine doctor to check her pulse. The doctor delivered some medicine today.”

“Have the medicine checked carefully. Make sure there’s nothing in it that shouldn’t be.”

The butler’s heart skipped a beat. Something in the medicine? That couldn’t be, could it?

He straightened up. “Yes, Mr. Clarkson. I’ll make sure everything’s safe.”

Max nodded, then climbed into the car. The driver pulled away, and soon, Max was gone from the old house.
