From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 89

Autumn had no idea that Katie had been scolded earlier. She came home practically beaming and couldn’t wait to tell Peter about her day. “Peter, I think Marleigh really liked me today. She even asked me to come back next week for another check-up.”

Peter’s eyes lit up. “That’s amazing, Mom. If this keeps going, we’ll finally have a real connection with them.”

Autumn nodded, still buzzing with excitement. “Don’t worry, I know I need to keep it cool around Marleigh. I’m not a kid. I get how important this is.” She smiled, her gratitude clear. “Honestly, we have Jessie to thank for all of this. If it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t even have this chance.”

Lately, Autumn couldn’t say enough good things about Jessie. She’d completely stopped bringing up any of the old issues between Peter and Jessie.

“This weekend, if you’re free, why don’t you take Olga to the amusement park with Jessie? You guys haven’t gone out together in ages.” Autumn said it so casually, like the three of them were already a family.

Olga had just finished watching cartoons. The second she heard her grandma’s suggestion, she spun around in circles, giggling. “Yes, yes! Daddy, I want to go to the amusement park!”

She looked up at him with wide eyes. “Mommy used to take me, but I never liked going with her. Daddy, can you come with us this time?”

Olga made sure not to call Jessie “Mommy” in front of Grandma, even though she usually did. She knew her grandma didn’t like it, and she didn’t want to make things hard for Jessie. In the past, she’d never worried about Eleanor’s feelings.

Peter ruffled her hair. “Alright, I promise. We’ll all go together.”

He headed upstairs to call Jessie. When Jessie saw his name light up her screen, she smiled to herself and let it ring a little before she picked up. “Hey, Peter. It’s late. Is everything okay?”

Jessie had been staying with her parents for the past few days.

Peter’s voice was soft, almost gentle. “Jessie, let’s take Olga to the amusement park this weekend. She misses you. And honestly, I do too.”

That last line caught Jessie off guard. Her cheeks warmed. “I’m free on Saturday. I’d love to go.” She hesitated a second, then added, “How did things go with your mom today?”

Jessie hadn’t asked earlier on purpose. She wanted Peter to tell her himself, and judging by his tone, Autumn’s visit had gone well.

Max was looking forward to dinner tonight, but not just any dinner. He wanted Eleanor’s cooking.

He hadn’t told anyone he was coming back to the old house. He pretended he was just working late and coming home as usual. He’d already given Eleanor the code to his place.

When he opened the door, the first thing he saw was Eleanor in the kitchen, wearing an apron, moving around with quiet focus. Something about it made him feel at ease, like everything was right with the world.

Eleanor glanced over when she heard the door. “Mr. Clarkson, you’re home.”

She set down what she was doing and explained, “I had to stay at work a little later than planned, so I just got here too. I thought I’d keep it simple tonight. How about steak with pasta? And I made a creamy mushroom soup with porcini. Does that sound good?”

Eleanor had done her homework. She knew Max liked both Chinese and Western food, but tonight, to save time, she went with something Western.
