At 8:20 a.m., Niamh was clocking in at the office entrance just as Jareth’s black Mercedes swept through the main gates.
As she waited for the elevator, his motorized wheelchair rolled up and stopped beside her.
Niamh quickly turned to greet him. “Good morning, Mr. Bragg.”
Jareth just grunted in response, his eyes fixed straight ahead.
When the elevator doors opened, Niamh quickly stepped aside to let him go in first.
The moment the doors slid shut, he barked, “Ms. Lynn, didn't I tell you to wear the dresses I bought for you to work?”
There she was again, in some casual outfit that looked like it came from a bargain bin. What an embarrassment!
“Don’t forget, you are my secretary,” he snapped. “How can I take you to meet clients when you’re dressed so shabbily?”
Niamh rushed to explain. “I thought since it’s Sunday, I could dress more casually. That’s why I didn’t wear one of the dresses.”
“From now on, whenever you are with me, you will wear the clothes I bought for you. Do you understand?” he roared.
“Yes!”
“But, Mr. Bragg,” she added, “two dresses aren’t really enough.”
“Weren’t there three?”
Niamh’s voice was barely a whisper. “Didn’t you… rip one?”
A blush crept up her cheeks.
Jareth feigned ignorance. “What was that?”
Niamh took a breath and spoke louder. “I said, wasn’t one of them torn by you?”
A faint smile touched Jareth's lips. “Go buy a few more suitable dresses. I’ll reimburse you.”
“That’s not necessary!” Niamh’s refusal was immediate, the idea making her uncomfortable.
She noticed the bamboo was flourishing; in just a few days, it seemed greener and taller.
As she reached the door, Jareth added, “You’d better take good care of it, Ms. Lynn.”
“I will, Mr. Bragg. Don’t worry,” she assured him.
Niamh had just set the bamboo on her desk when the phone rang again.
It was Jareth.
“Ms. Lynn, bring me a coffee.”
“Right away, Mr. Bragg.”
She hurried off again to make the coffee.
Jareth took one sip and grimaced. “Remember this, Ms. Lynn,” he said with disgust. “I don’t take sugar in my coffee.”
