Ira’s Pov
I would not want them to hang Lior because I refused to go back with them. He saved my life once. Even offered to be executed in my place. I understand that he was certain that his refined masters would want to keep their loyal assistant so they would spare him. But now they would love to kill him. And I am sure they will do it anyway, regardless of what I choose.
I cannot understand how they can just call him a traitor. Because he knew better than to let them know that it was I who commanded the dragons? He knew what they would have done to me. He is the kindest of men, not a traitor.
“Neither I nor Lior has committed a crime against you or this kingdom. Not one that isn’t a false accusation anyway. If you kill Lior your soldiers will always question why you hanged their favourite commander when they all knew that he was loyal to you and a good man,” I say.
“You will definitely make the wisest of queens without putting any effort,” King Adon proudly commends like none of what I said bothers him. “Surely you do not intend to disgrace yourself by committing to our servant,” he adds.
How comes being invariably arrogant isn’t his power? I should bring down his ego just a little bit. It will be worth dying for. “Your servant happens to a better man, your majesty. I value a man’s good heart more than a crown. I value his commitment more than your wealth or beautiful faces. Reputations are for pretentious Royals,” I say.
His brows rise, but somehow he remains calm, his face revealing none of his emotions
“That’s incredibly thoughtful. It puzzles me why you haven’t figured out that Lior would not have helped you in any way did not know about your gift,” Angel Ronen says.
That may be true. But I wouldn’t have helped myself either. Who would risk death to help a human with no value?
if he
“I still prefer that to what I imagine you intend to do to me. And I am sure that you will also kill Lior because he no longer has value to you. So why not just do it here and be done with it?” I say.
Angel Ronen’s eyes flash with shock. But his brother smirks like my outburst entertains him.
“I really like your wits even though you’re wrong. Can we continue this argument at the palace? The wind is messing up my hair,” he says.
I think punching him would be a really good idea. Since they will kill me for my blood I might as well accomplish one thing that no one has ever dared to do, I will punch the most arrogant of the angel kings in the face.
“I will help fix your hair,” I say while stepping closer to make sure that my punch won’t miss his nose.
I throw it with all my strength and speed and it lands on his temple. I hear loud gasps all around, including from their soldiers.
Finally the angel has a worried look in his eyes as he touches his precious face. I must be the first person to give him a bruise, a bold achievement before they kill me.
“Now that’s a crime whose punishment can be death. You shouldn’t punch us in public. You can have your revenge once we get back to the palace,” Angel Ronen says in a sweet tone.
“I will never set a foot back into that accursed place. Just like you warned me not to,” I state.
Angel Adon huffs impatiently. “You can chose to walk or be carried.”
I doubt he would do the latter? I mean carry a dirty human that they made everyone believe is out of her mind. He is the proudest of the all. He wouldn’t want to touch me.
I notice Lior nervously approaching and he halts several steps away, looking at us. “Ira… do as your Kings say. Let’s return to the palace,” he surprisingly says.
“This belonged to our deseased mother. Do not lose it,” he says. 1
I say nothing. Because I am trying to keep my reckless mouth shut. I look out and notice Linda following Lior into another carriage. She looks rueful as he moves fast ahead, avoiding her.
Our carriage starts to move, and the two angels lean closer, enveloping me in an unwelcome embrace. I do not move or utter a word.
“You look quite beautiful, dear, but we shall make you perfect. We have the best dresses waiting for you at the Palace, ” Adon says in a low tone.
I am not a fool to believe such lies. He had called me ugly a dozen times when I was in their palace. Does he really think that I have forgotten that?
Besides I am a flawed human who hasn’t had a chance to bath or change clothes within the last twenty four hours. I know exactly how bad I look. And the angel hasn’t gone blind.
“It is impossible to express our regrets over the pain and misery we have caused you, Ira,” Angel Ronen says, taking my right hand in his. “May I ask if your wounds have healed?”
I maintain silence despite the fact that I feel like exploding on the inside at the reminder of the punishment they put me through while seeking to please their beautiful queen. A tear rolls down my left cheek and I close my eyes to prevent more from flowing.
“Do not withhold pain, it will ruin your heart. Crying is not a show of weakness, Ira, not after what you have been through,” King Ronen says, wiping the tear drop off my face with the palm of his hand.
