Ira’s Point Of View
The Island is extremely close to the next mainland that it barely fits the ‘Island’ description. It has only two hills and a hidden valley inbetween. A towering wall connecting the hills blocks the path into the valley, leaving only a tinny opening that only a child can fit through.
“You led us here knowing well that the valley is blocked? You’re the worst guide we were unfortunate to come across,” Thumas mocks Aruin.
Surely there must be a way through. Why else does other visitors come? Even the seers would not completely lock themselves in a valley that could flood.
“From what I have heard, the weight of your fortune pushes the gates open. Let’s hope we have enough.” our Sincarion explains.
I do not mean to judge, but the seers sound like such greedy people. Their precious service is definitely not meant for the poor.
King Ronen takes my hand and helps me off the boat and onto the sandy beach. Not that I cannot do so myself. They got energy to waste. Linda takes Lior’s hand but he leans on her instead. She smiles nevertheless.
We stride towards the wall and find a space, shaped like an iron bow, close to the tiny opening on the wall. Aruin takes all the fortune and empties it on the large bow. The weight of the fortune seems to be pushing some levers as a part of the wall pulls back like a sliding door, leaving a huge opening for us to enter the valley.
There is a dazzling road paved with glittering gemstones in between the two hills. The priceless road leads towards a cave at the far end where the two hills interject.
“I have never seen such a waste of fortune before. The idiots demand so much just so that they can walk on it while living in a cave?” Thumas scoffs.
“It is not in our place to judge how they spend it. They do not force anyone to come here. Neither do they sacrifice innocent lives to earn it,” Aruin responds.
We do not have time to argue about the choices of our hosts when my father is still in Lysandra’s captivity. I take the first steps down the shimmering road and everyone hurries to catch up.
“Do I need to remind you that you Sincarions had no one to fight on your side because you charged a huge fortune for every little service?” Thumas says to Aruin.
“Sincarions were hunted down because there are people like you, seeking to exchange their lives with gold,” Lior corrects. “That’s true. Sincarions would still be around if it wasn’t for greed,” Linda adds in support of her mate.
“Yes. We must play the lots to choose the best seer to serve us. The powerful ones have the smallest markings,” Aruin confirms. “If you toss the stones on the path leading to the door and five out of the ten stones land in such a way that the markings on top resemble those on the door, the door will open and the Seer will come out. However if the markings on top of five of the stones resemble those of a different door, a different Seer will step out. Unless you turn around as if walking out, no door will open,” he explains.
“Sounds like a dangerous game and we already gave them all of our fortune,” Lior expresses his disappointment.
“But we have a huge advantage seeing that we are many. Each of us has the chance to play the lots,” Aruin points.
Sounds fair finally. I pity anyone who comes here alone.
I reach out for the ten stones in the bow and step in the path that leads to the door with the smallest markings. We need the best counsel we can get to win over both the devious witch and Luminis. Hopefully we will be lucky to win the service of the most powerful seer.
I bend my back a little before tossing the stones on the path.
