“What’s wrong with that? I just want to maximize the benefits, which is good for the company and our family,” Nicolas said.

Family? That word used to be something Zoya longed for.

She married him, hoping to have a family again.

But in the end, she realized he couldn’t give her that.

“If I hadn’t saved Wren today, would you still want me back at the company?” Zoya asked.

“You’re the lady of the company, and you can come back anytime,” Nicolas replied.

“So can I just announce at the company that I’m the lady of the house?” She raised an eyebrow.

Nicolas was silent for a moment before saying, “We agreed before to keep our marriage low–key for now, and announce it when the time is right.”

“Because if we announce it now, it’d be like telling everyone in the company you cheated on me, right? Everyone at the company knows Jasmine is your first love, but no one knows about our marriage,” Zoya said bluntly.

Instantly, Nicolas got annoyed at her words. “Do you have to make things so difficult for me?”

“I’m not trying to make things difficult, so I don’t plan to go back to the company,” Zoya said. “Besides, at the horse farm, I already told Wren that if he insists on repaying me, he should donate to charity.

“So don’t expect me to help you get Wren to invest in Mayer Technology!”

Embarrassed and angry, Nicolas ignored Zoya the whole night.

The next day, Zoya went to Eowyn’s company and agreed to start working there officially after her parents‘ funeral.

At lunch, Zoya saw a photo in Violette’s Instagram. It was a picture of a man’s hands holding a bowl of soup with a spoon.

The caption

read: [Look what my brother made for his soon–to–be wife. That looks and smells incredible.]

Looking at the soup in the photo, Zoya finally understood what Nicolas was doing in the kitchen that morning.

Back when she was sick, running a 104°F fever, almost unable to get out of bed, Nicolas just said the company was busy and told her to take care of herself.

Even though her fever wasn’t fully gone, he was already calling her back to work.

She went to the office with an IV drip, and he thought it was normal. He didn’t even make her soup, let alone order takeout- she had to do that herself.

But now, he was willing to get up early in the morning to cook soup for Jasmine.

The difference between love and indifference, really, was obvious.

“What are you looking at?” At that moment, Eowyn curiously leaned over to take a look.

After seeing that photo, she froze for a sec, then snapped back to reality. “Nicolas cooking for Jasmine? He’s being way too much. You’re not even divorced yet!”

“Whatever,” Zoya said, pocketing her phone and getting ready to leave.

“Where are you going? You’re not gonna storm the hospital, are you?” Eowyn asked curiously.

“I’m not that idle. I’m going to the crematorium to see my parents.”

But just as Zoya stepped out of Eowyn’s office, a black car pulled up in front of her.

A man in a black suit got out and respectfully addressed her, “Mrs. Mayer, I’m the secretary of Mr. Wren Richmond. He wants to thank you personally for saving his life and invites you to dinner.”

“No need. I already told him that if he wanted to thank me, donating to charity would do,” Zoya said, walking over to her own car, opening the door, and getting in.

Half an hour later, she arrived at the crematorium’s urn storage and stared at the display cabinet where her parents‘ urn was kept.

The urn was covered with a national flag.

“Mom, Dad, I originally thought Nicolas owed you an apology, that he should come pay respects and say he’s sorry. But… no need, right?” she said softly.

All she heard in response was the quiet air around her.

She reached out her hand, touching the urn sincerely.

“Just wait a little longer. Soon, I’ll take you back to our hometown,” Zoya said.

You’re leaving this place?” Suddenly, a voice came from behind her.

Only after the three bows did Wren approach Zoya.

“Let’s go,” he said.

She opened her mouth. “Why did you…”

“Bow? They’re martyrs. It’s the right thing to do,” Wren replied.

Instantly, Zoya felt an indescribable emotion surge within her. Everyone said Wren was a madman, unpredictable, and capable of wild acts.

She’d even seen him lose it. After taking down some criminal who tried to kill him, he held a gun to the guy’s head.

Yet just now, he showed such respect for her parents.

The one who should’ve done this was Nicolas, but instead, it was Wren who did it.

Then, they left the funeral home. Outside, a black Maybach was waiting, and as soon as they stepped out, a bodyguard immediately opened the rear door.

Getting inside the car, Wren took Zoya to a private club restaurant.

“Did Mrs. Mayer come by here?” he asked.

“Nope,” Zoya replied.

“The food here’s not bad. You should give it a try,” Wren said.

Before long, the exquisite dishes were served, and Zoya just dove in eating.

On one hand, she really was hungry, and on the other, she wanted to finish up so they could all go their separate ways

sooner.

Having developed a fast eating pace from her military days, Zoya usually ate quickly. Feeling around 80% full, she stopped, her gaze landing on Wren’s hand holding the fork,

There was something strangely beautiful about how he held his fork.

Those long, nice–looking hands. Beautiful but dangerous. Even the silver fork seemed like it could kill in his hands.

“Why’s Mrs. Mayer staring at my hand? Does something seem off with it?” Wren’s voice casually broke the silence.

“No, I just think it’s a beautiful hand,” Zoya honestly replied, thinking it was like a beautifully crafted weapon.

“Oh yeah? If I end up dying before you, Mrs. Mayer, I’ll have my hand cut off, preserved, and sent right to you.” Wren just dropped that bombshell like it was nothing.
