“Yeah, so unfortunately, we can’t seal the deal with your company this time,” Alex said.

Nicolas felt utterly absurd. “But Zoya is just an ordinary employee. Why would your company terminate the investment plan just because of her departure?”

The mocking laugh from the other end of the line said it all. “Seems like Mr. Mayer really doesn’t know the value Mrs. Mayer brings.”

Nicolas stared at the phone in his hand, completely baffled by Alex’s last words.

‘Zoya? What value could she possibly have?‘ With this thought, he called Zoya and asked her to come back to the office.

Though reluctant, Zoya didn’t want to rock the boat before cutting ties with Nicolas for good, so she returned to the

company.

The moment he saw her, Nicolas immediately accused, “Your resignation made Blanhull Investments pull out. Did you collude with them to get back at me?”

“Get back at you?” Zoya laughed it off. “I’m not so powerful as to collude with Blanhull Investments. If they pulled out, it means they didn’t see potential in the project.

“Then explain why Mr. Blevins said the investment was terminated because of your resignation?” Nicolas demanded.

Zoya was taken aback but figured out soon–Blanhull Investments likely did their homework on her, aware of her track record in drones.

Now that she’d been replaced by Violette, there was no value left for investors.

“Probably the investors didn’t think much of Violette’s abilities,” Zoya replied,

Violette, who had been eavesdropping at the office door; burst in, glaring at Zoya. “What do you mean they didn’t think much of me? Sounds like you had some shady dealings with the investors!”

Her eyes gleamed with malice. “Unless you slept with them to get the deal, huh?”

Zoya’s face hardened.

“Violette, don’t talk nonsense!” Nicolas frowned.

“I’m not!” Violette protested, “Nicolas, the investors pulled out just because Zoya left. Something’s definitely fishy! I bet she slept with them!”

Nicolas kept silent, his gaze on Zoya now filled with suspicion.

Zoya met his scrutinizing look head–on. “You believe that?”

“So, tell me,” Nicolas spoke slowly, “why would the investor pull out just because you quit? Did you really…”

He didn’t finish, but the implication was crystal clear.

Hearing this, Zoya burst out laughing, the bitterness all too evident in her laugh.

Four years together–one before marriage, three after–and not a shred of trust from him.

A few casual words from his sister, and he was ready to doubt her integrity.

“See, Nicolas? She’s clearly guilty,” Violette chimed in, adding fuel to the fire.

Zoya stopped laughing, her face cold as she glared at Violette. “You sure I actually slept with the investor?”

“Yeah, I’m sure,” Violette said confidently, chin up.

“Many aerospace companies will be there. You should check it out; maybe you’ll find new partnership opportunities.”

Nicolas was aware of this aviation exhibition and had intended to go.

“Unfortunately, I’ll have to represent Cloud Airlines and can’t accompany you the whole time, but I’ll join you when I can,” Jasmine said. As Cloud Airlines’s first female pilot, she naturally served as the face of the airline at such events.

“You’ve already done so much for me; I don’t know how to repay you,” Nicolas said.

“You don’t need to repay me. If I hadn’t gone abroad, you wouldn’t have married Zoya, and maybe-”

“Enough, let’s not talk about her,” Nicolas interrupted. “I’ll go handle your discharge procedures. Just a second.”

“Okay,” Jasmine responded with a smile.

As she watched Nicolas leave, her smile faded.

Her family was just the secondary branch of the Ingram family, and most of the wealth was controlled by the main branch.
