Daphne was startled. Ever since that day when she said to Zoya that Wren was interested in another girl, she
hadn’t seen Wren at all.
She’d been hoping that after she spilled the beans, Wren and Zoya would break up.
But just now, Jasmine had told Daphne that Zoya was the one who got her thrown in jail, and Wren actually helped Zoya.
“Daphne, Wren is really Zoya’s shield now. From now on, you won’t have anyone to back you up in the Lucero family.” Jasmine’s words still echoed in Daphne’s mind.
Even Jasmine could see how things were for her in the Lucero family. Daphne understood it better than anyone else.
“Mr. Newman, do you know why Wren wants to see me?” Daphne asked warily.
“You’ll understand once you meet with Mr. Richmond,” Gilbert replied mildly.
The car door opened, and a bodyguard kept his eyes glued to her.
Clearly, if she hesitated even a little, he’d force her inside.
Daphne climbed in, feeling a knot of nerves twisting in her stomach.
The car rolled up to the gates of Richmond Manor.
Daphne stepped out, following Gilbert through the stately entrance and winding hallways, until finally coming face–to–face with Wren.
Wren sat elegantly in a chair, his suit enhancing his air of sophistication and enigma. His sharp and cold eyes would suddenly gain a subtle, alluring glow when they landed on Zoya.
Just thinking about it sent another wave of jealousy stabbing through Daphne’s heart.
The look Wren gave Zoya was nothing like the one he ever spared her.
‘It’s not like I’m lacking anything compared to her!‘ Daphne thought.
Daphne asked, “Wren, did you bring me here just to interrogate me about what I said last time? I was only speaking the truth. Honestly, maybe your feelings for Zoya are just because you see her as a stand–in for that girl from your past.”
Wren snorted, a cold smirk tugging at his lips. “A stand–in? I’ve never been interested in substitutes. When I want someone, it has to be that exact person.
“No one else will ever do. If it’s not her, those substitutes are meaningless to me.”
Daphne retorted, “But isn’t it true you’ve never gotten over that girl? Haven’t you been searching for her all
along? If Zoya isn’t just a replacement, how could you fall for her so quickly?”
“Quickly?” Wren raised an eyebrow, looking almost amused. He felt that he had not fallen for Zoya quickly.
If he’d realized his feelings for Zoya right when he met her, he would’ve helped her get out of that marriage. much sooner.
He wouldn’t have let her waste another second trapped in that mess.
He said, “Daphne, I looked for that little girl because she’d saved my life. I just wanted to repay her. As for Zoya, I love her for exactly who she is.”
Both Zoya and that girl from the past dazzled him in their own way, but only Zoya truly stole his heart.
He knew exactly where gratitude ended and real love began.
Daphne’s face flashed with jealousy and bitterness. “What’s so great about Zoya, anyway? What makes her worth loving?”
“That’s not for you to know,” Wren replied coldly, “I called you here to warn you. If you ever spout nonsense in front of Zoya again, I’ll cut out your tongue.”
Daphne felt a cold shiver crawl down her spine. “You’d really cut out my tongue just for Zoya?”
“For her, there’s a lot worse I could do. Want to test me?” Wren’s voice was flat. It looked like he didn’t care if Daphne lived or died.
Daphne’s breath caught in her throat.
She realized in that moment that he absolutely meant it.
For Zoya, there’s no limit to how ruthless he can be,‘ Daphne thought.
Right then, her uncle’s warning popped back into her head.
He said, “Daphne, you really shouldn’t mess with Wren anymore. He already ruined one of your eyes. If you piss him off again and he seriously wants you dead, losing just an eye will be the least of your problems.”
“What if I actually told Wren that secret? If I say that Zoya’s brother never got saved because of him, what would he do to me then? Daphne felt a chill run down her spine.
Just thinking about it made cold sweat bead across her skin.
She’d originally planned to use that secret to make Wren her ally again.
But now, if she let that secret slip, she believed that he might actually slice out her tongue on the spot.
“So, do you get my message?” Wren’s tone lifted with a clear warning.
“Yes, I get it…” Daphne stammered, her voice shaking, barely daring to speak.
“Looks like you really don’t get it,” Wren said, flicking his hand with lazy authority. One of his men instantly stepped up and gave Daphne a vicious slap right across the mouth.
Daphne shrieked in pain as her lip split open, blood seeping out immediately.
“Keep going,” Wren said, not even bothering to look up from his book, sounding as if he couldn’t care less.
Over and over, the blows landed, until Daphne’s mouth was filled with hot blood.
“Please, have mercy. Wren, please…” Daphne begged, her voice breaking and trembling.
She’d heard plenty of tales about Wren’s ruthless ways with other people, but back then, she’d always felt secretly smug–believing she was different.
Though he wasn’t soft with her, he’d usually indulge her.
As long as her requests weren’t too outrageous, Wren would always agree.
Even when she witnessed him being cruel to others right in front of her, Daphne never tried to intervene. She’d just stand aside and watch.
Deep down, she’d mock those poor fools for being foolish enough to mess with Wren?‘
But now, when Wren’s cruelty was turned on her, it hit totally differently. Being the target was a shock she never expected.
Daphne couldn’t even count how many times she was slapped before it finally stopped. Her cheeks and lips. were so numb in the end.
“Daphne, do you understand now?” Wren’s icy tone rang out again.
“Yes, I understand,” Daphne replied, utterly shaken and defeated. But inside, her resentment simmered even deeper.
For Zoya, Wren would actually do this to me!‘ Daphne thought.
“Wren, do you really think Zoya will stick by your side forever? No matter how badly you mess up, do you believe she’ll forgive you and let it slide?” Daphne said while enduring the pain.
Wren said coolly, his tone leaving no room for doubt, “She’ll forgive me, because I’d never do anything she truly despises. Zoya and I will be together till the end. As for you, you’d better kill off those hopeless thoughts for good.”
Daphne let out a bitter, mocking laugh, her eyes burning with jealousy and resentment.
‘But what if Wren’s already done something Zoya would truly hate? Would she still forgive him then? I can’t wait to see the day their relationship shatters, Daphne thought.
When Wren got back from Richmond Manor, he found Zoya sprawled out asleep on the couch, still clutching a photo in her hand.
He walked over and saw it was a picture of Zoya with her parents and brother.
Wren gently slipped the photo out of her fingers and stared at Oscar’s face.
Wren thought, ‘Is Oscar still alive? No, he’s got to be alive.
“If I really find you, would Zoya forgive me?” Wren muttered quietly to himself.
But just as he set the photo down on the coffee table and leaned in to scoop Zoya up and take her to bed, he realized that her eyes were wide open.
