Chapter 185
Wren blurted out, “No, I just…”
He bit his lip, lost for words.
Seeing Nicolas so down just now, Wren couldn’t help but think about himself.
It Zoya ever decided to leave me, would she be that determined too?’ Wren wondered,
“Don’t worry, I honestly don’t feel anything for Nicolas anymore. You are my boyfriend, so you should trust me and trust yourself a bit more,” Zoya assured him, mistaking Wren’s worry for lingering feelings about
Nicolas.
Wren managed a weak smile. Even though he was always so in control, when it came to her, all his confidence seemed to vanish.
“Besides, when it comes to relationships, I’m pretty decisive. When I say I’m done, I’m really done. I don’t go back,” Zoya added.
Wren froze. She was obviously telling him she’d let go of Nicolas for good.
But then, a wave of panic hit him, as if she were talking about him.
“Zoya, promise me you’ll love me forever, okay?” Wren murmured.
Zoya thought, ‘Forever is such a heavy word. Who can really promise it’ll last until the very end?’
But when she saw the yearning in Wren’s eyes, the words just got stuck in her throat.
“Okay,” she said softly.
They hadn’t been together long, but Zoya could sense Wren’s love for her in every tender moment.
It was just like the love she’d always dreamed her parents might share. She could feel that he had a deep and unshakeable love for her. He would trust her even with his life.
Wren hesitated, “When you told Nicolas you’d marry me and have kids with me one day-was that just to piss him off, or did you really mean it?”
“He’s not even worth me saying things I don’t mean just to piss him off,” Zoya answered.
Wren’s eyes sparkled. ‘She really means it. She’s actually serious about marrying me, about starting a family together!’ he thought.
“When?” he blurted out, practically jumping out of his seat.
‘What?’ Zoya thought. She was totally thrown off.
“So when are you actually gonna marry me and have kids?” Wren asked again.
Zova said, “Let’s wait until things settle down between us. Plus, I’ll be heading out to the frontier soon to look for my brother.”
“Then how about this? Once you make it back from the frontier, whether you find your brother or not, let’s get married, okay?” Wren said, his voice full of hope.
He’s really trying to rush things, Zoya mused, feeling a bit flustered by his eagerness.
She wrinkled her brow. “But we barely even know each other.”
It hadn’t been long since they started dating.
“Zoya, it doesn’t matter how long we’ve known each other. I’ve already made up my mind that you’re the only one I could ever want.” Wren said.
He picked up her hand and pressed it to his chest, letting her feel his heartbeat thudding beneath her palm.
He asked, “Am I the one you want?”
Zoya stared at him, watching Wren’s lips as he went on, “I want to marry you, I want us to have adorable kids together. Zoya, I want that more than anything.”
He felt that marrying her and starting a family was the only way he could truly keep her by his side and finally quiet the anxiety in his heart.
Strangely enough, it all echoed what his father had done to his mother.
The one difference was, his father had forced his mother into marriage and children, while he’d hidden the truth from Zoya, hoping that would be enough to keep her with him.
Zoya stared into Wren’s eyes, her palm pressed to his chest, feeling every rapid heartbeat thudding under her skin.
His heart was racing way faster than normal.
Is he really that nervous about this?’ Zoya thought to herself.
He was holding his breath, anxiously waiting for whatever she would
Just like Nicolas said, Zoya was never one to rush into love, especially after experiencing a failed marriage. She knew she should be more cautious this time around, not repeat old mistakes and put her heart on the line so carelessly.
Her head told her not to rush, but her heart was screaming to say yes.
‘Then, I guess I’ll just roll the dice, Zoya thought.
Taking a deep breath, Zoya heard herself say, “Okay, when I get back from the border, let’s get married.”

Nicolas slumped in his chair, his arm still bandaged up, and could barely take the nonstop complaining from his mom and his sister. His headache was splitting his skull-could they ever give it a rest?
“Nicolas, our case is about to go to court. Those lawyers we hired are useless. Seriously, couldn’t you find one of those star lawyers who never lose?” Violette griped.
Anica demanded, “That’s right! We absolutely cannot end up behind bars. If we do, we’ll never be able to show our faces in our hometown again. Son, spend more cash and get us the best lawyer money can buy.”
Nicolas’s head was pounding. “Don’t you get it that I’m about to go bankrupt? I’ve already mortgaged everything I could, even this villa!”
“What?” Anica and Violette stared at him, totally stunned.
Violette protested, “Bankrupt? Nicolas, how could you even be close to bankruptcy? Your company is so successful! Even if money’s a little tight, you’ve got tons of shares. Just grab a couple big projects whenever you want and you’ll be fine-”
Nicolas cut her off, his voice rising with frustration, “Violette, I can’t believe how naive you are. Do you really think projects just fall into your lap?
“Plenty of giant companies have gone bankrupt just because their cash dried up. If I could actually sell those shares off, do you think I’d be stressing like this?”
If the company really did go under, all those shares he had would become worthless.
Violette shrank back, too scared to say another word after Nicolas’s outburst.
“The lawyers I got for you are already the best I could possibly find!” Nicolas snapped.
Just like Harvey warned, not a single one of the four powerhouse law firms in Ranard City would touch Anica and Violette’s case.
“What if we really have to go to prison?” Violette and Anica cried, voices shaking with panic.
“Then you go to prison. Simple as that,” Nicolas replied, completely unfazed.
Anica and Violette immediately burst into loud sobs and wails, acting like the world was collapsing around them.
Nicolas snapped, “You can only blame yourself. If you two hadn’t schemed against Zoya, none of this mess would’ve come your way!”
‘If it weren’t for them, maybe I’d still be with Zoya… Nicolas thought bitterly. His resentment toward them slowly grew stronger.

“Hey, your birthday’s coming up soon. Got anything you want?” Zoya asked playfully, lying in bed in their apartment. Her fingers lazily traced along the bridge of Wren’s nose as she gazed up at him.
After what had just happened between the sheets, she now had plenty of fresh marks decorating her body.
“No, it’s fine,” Wren said quietly, “I don’t do birthdays.”
“Really? You just don’t like birthdays or something?” Zoya couldn’t help but ask, sounding confused.
Wren’s lips tightened a little. “My birthday’s also the anniversary of my mom’s death. That’s why I never
celebrate it.”
