Chapter 22
“I refuse,” Zoya said without hesitation.
Nicolas frowned. “Are you still mad at me?”
“I’m not mad,” Zoya said seriously. “When I quit, I never intended to come back to the company.”

Nicolas’s expression darkened. “Do you realize joining Bluesky Technology would violate a non–compete? I could sue you. You’d not only be on the hook for all the company’s losses, but the Bluesky projects you worked on would be affected too.”
Zoya froze, staring at him in disbelief; she hadn’t expected to hear that from his mouth.
Nicolas avoided her gaze, suddenly a bit defensive. “If you don’t want to drag your friend’s company down, you’d better

Zoya scoffed. “Nicolas, I thought that even if you were vague about relationships, at least you were honest in business. Now I see I gave you way too much credit.”
Nicolas went pale, saying, “I’m just trying to get the company through this rough patch. If the project’s partner is going to cancel because you left, then coming back is the quickest fix.”
Over the past few days, Nicolas had hired professionals and rewritten the proposal, but no matter what they did, the client insisted they wouldn’t change their mind unless Zoya was the one in charge.,
They even knew she’d gone to Bluesky Technology, which implied they might partner with Bluesky.
So Nicolas was determined, by any means, to get her back.
“I’m not going back to Mayer Technology, Zoya said coldly.
“Are you not afraid of being sued?” Nicolas snapped.
“If you’re going to sue me, you’d first have to show I actually signed a non–compete, Nicolas. My contract with the company was just a regular employee agreement,” Zoya replied.
Nicolas’s face turned ugly. Zoya was right.
When he’d first started the business he had treated Zoya like an unskilled, ordinary employee and had only given her the most basic contract.
There had been no need to require a non–compete. So now, naturally, there was nothing he could sue her over.

In the following days, Nicolas busied himself trying to raise funds. The bank loan wasn’t approved, and the company’s cash flow was in jeopardy.
After receiving yet another refusal to help, Nicolas flung his phone aside in irritation.
The company had sailed along for three years, but the moment Zoya left, projects ran into trouble and funding dried up. Even the other projects were in shambles.
“Why can’t you even handle these small things? We never had this problem before.” Nicolas exploded at a routine meeting, only to have the senior execs reply, “These things used to be handled by Zoya.”
Zoya had already left the company, yet her name hung over the place like a shadow.

Jasmine frowned, lifted her chin with quiet pride, and said, “If you don’t want to give it, you can just say so. I’m not insisting you buy it.”
Her understanding eased Nicolas. He said, “The fact that you care is enough. I’ll fix the company’s problems, and one day I’ll repay you even more.”
Back then, when he ran into attackers while protecting his tuition money, Nicolas had been stabbed eight times and thrown into the river.
On the brink of death, Nicolas felt someone grab him tight and drag him out of the water.
A voice kept shouting in his ear. “Hold on. Stay with me. I’ll save you.”
That voice gave Nicolas the will to live.
So when he opened his eyes in the hospital and learned that Jasmine had been the one who saved him, Nicolas made a firm. decision in his heart. ‘One day I’ll repay her with everything I have!
Seeing the earnestness on his face, Jasmine smiled faintly and said, “I don’t need you to repay me. When I helped you, I only wanted you to survive.”

Besides, she hadn’t had to do much. Jasmine had seen him injured by the river, and the paramedics happened to arrive and assumed she was the one who called, so she went with them to the hospital.
At the time, Jasmine had thought it a hassle, but in hindsight the returns had far exceeded anything she’d imagined.
Jasmine thought, ‘Who would have thought that the poor kid back then would become the head of a publicly listed company?
‘The only drawback, perhaps, is that he still isn’t divorced.
