Chapter 172 Simmer Down

Zephyrion slumped against a tree, one hand clutching his stomach, his face twisted with pain. He stared at the girl smeared in camouflage paint who was fighting toe-to-toe-no, actually overpowering-the Commander of the Troya Empire, their so-called national hero.
Doubt clawed at his mind. Was this really Sylvara? If it wasn’t, then maybe it made sense why she’d punched him before. Maybe he’d never really known her at all.
The massive fireball in Agares’s hand crackled violently, lightning crawling across its surface.
Sylvara’s flaming whip snapped in midair, suddenly changing direction and striking the fireball instead.
A deep explosion followed, scattering sparks everywhere in a burst of light that lit up the forest like fireworks.
Sylvara landed smoothly, her body low, her eyes locked on Agares as he gathered another fireball in his palm. “Your Highness, your fire-type ability’s evolved. You can summon lightning now?”
Agares faced her squarely, his expression tight, his painted face grim. “Your strength runs deeper than you let on. I didn’t expect that.”
Sylvara let out a soft laugh. “Right back at you.”
Blood ran down from the seared mark across Agares’s chest, the skin torn and raw beneath the burn.
Agares didn’t even flinch. “Your fire-type ability is pure. I can’t match you.”
Sylvara’s lips curled into a sharp smile. “A mutated fire-type ability stronger than my pure one, huh? And you’re calling that humility? Ever heard of shame?”
Agares tightened his grip. The blazing fireball in his palm vanished in an instant. “I’m not being humble. I’m just stating the truth.”
Her eyes narrowed, a fierce light flashing inside them. The whip in her hand ignited again, glowing like a blade of living flame. “You know what pisses me off? When someone fights me and then stop halfway just to insult me.”
Last time, he’d pulled back before the fight was over.
Now he’d done it again.
It didn’t actually hurt, but it felt like a slap to the face.
Agares stepped back.
Sylvara lunged forward, striking with her whip-fast, sharp, precise.
A heavy crack of thunder rolled through the sky above them.
The forest trembled as a blinding streak of lightning tore through the clouds.
High above, in a jet slicing through the blue sky, Jonathan heard it. Behind his dark shades, his violet eyes

Aslan, seated beside him, glanced over in confusion. He had never once seen Agares summon lightning before. “Are you sure it’s him and not just the weather?”
Jonathan slammed the throttle forward, the engines roaring. “Aslan, are your eyes still parked back on the runway? The sky’s clear. You really think that’s just random lightning? What, you think someone got struck down for bad karma?”
Aslan went quiet.
That wasn’t what he meant.
He was just trying to make sense of it.
From what he remembered, no one on the Starnet had ever seen Agares use lightning outside the battlefield.
Some people even claimed his lightning-type ability had been crippled years ago-that’s why he’d stopped using it.
“Then if it really is him,” Aslan said slowly, “who could push him far enough to summon it again?” The moment he said it, one name flashed in his head-sweetheart.
He shook it off hard. No way.
Sweetheart could cook, sure.
But she didn’t have a shred of mental energy.
He’d checked for himself.
Anyone strong enough to make Agares summon lightning had to be his equal-or powerful enough to leave him no choice but to go all in.
“Hold on,” Aslan said, his voice rising when Jonathan didn’t respond. “You’re telling me one of the five academies had someone that strong? Did His Highness actually face someone head-on during the capture?”
Jonathan kept the jet locked on the point where the lightning had struck. His tone stayed even, but there was doubt in his voice. “Could be.”
The sky cracked open. Thunder rolled above them as a bolt of lightning ripped through the clouds. Sylvara’s lips lifted in a sharp grin. Her flaming whip snapped in her hand, twisting upward to meet the lightning head-on.
Agares’ painted face went rigid. He had drawn the lightning to shatter her whip, not for her to throw it into the strike itself.
In an instant, his body blurred, moving faster than sight, his hand shooting out to grab her.
Sylvara stepped aside, graceful and precise. The next second, both she and her whip were inside the lightning’s blast radius.
Agares’s dark eyes narrowed, and he lunged after her.

A thunderous roar ripped through the forest, so loud it shook the air.
The lightning crashed into her, wrapping her in blinding light.
“Feywin!” Veyric shouted, his voice breaking as he sprinted forward.
Zolensky and Bane grabbed him, pinning him down. “You idiot! That’s lightning! You’ll die if you go in there!”
“Feywin’s in there!” Veyric’s voice was raw, desperate. His eyes were wide and furious. “Agares! How could you hit her with that? She’s nothing but a weak girl-a useless nobody from some trash planet!”

Agares staggered back, his arm still reaching toward where she’d been.
The lightning hit Sylvara full-on and fused with her fire ability in an instant.
Flames engulfed her body, twisting and burning with arcs of electricity.
