Me: How are you doing, Sphinx?

Sphinx: Why is this so hard for me? You would’ve been done already, wouldn’t you?

Me: I have three years of experience on you. In three years, you’ll know what to do and it will be easy. If it were easy for everyone, everyone would be a techy and have cool names like us.

I see the light for the camera come on. I taught Wendy how to turn on my camera. Now that we’re sort of officially dating, I wanted our relationship to be more on equal ground.

I grin as her beautiful face comes into view and I turn on the sound.

“I wanted to make sure you got the full impact of this eye roll,” she says, then gives me an exaggerated eye roll.

“Are you sure you weren’t just missing my pretty face?” | purr. I swear, this woman gets prettier every damn day.

Maybe I’m biased.

‘There’s nothing biased about it. She IS the most beautiful woman we’ve ever laid eyes on,” my wolf, Saggio, says. He always comes forward when Wendy is on the screen and he’s always paying attention when we’re monitoring herwork. Since he doesn’t give a shit about my work ninety nine percent of the time, I’m really hoping that I’m right about what this means. Time will tell. I still have several months before Wendy turns eighteen.

“Can you give me a hint about how I can do this more easily?” she asks.

“Tell me what you’ve searched so far,” I say, wanting her to figure out how to make the connections. She’ll need the knowledge of how to find abstract connections in the future. I was actually excited to get this job and for Piper and Alpha Henry to agree that Sphinx could help me. This is something we do a lot on the tech team and it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. It’s tedious, frustrating work.

“Financials. There’s nothing there. Vivienne was part of Alpha Grady’s pack for about three years. She got close to Piper, but no one else that I can tell.”

“She didn’t sleep with Alpha Patrick or Alpha Grady?

Maybe she got pregnant, has a baby hidden away somewhere or he forced an abortion, and now he’s trying to hide her away?” I ask. 1

“No, I went that route. I didn’t find anything.”

But i didn’t find anything on my cursory search. That doesn’t mean it’s not there and if Sphinx doesn’t come üp with anything else, I’ll dig deeper on that, but for now, I want her to keep working through it, as painful as it is for her.

“What about the mother? Have you found anything on her? Maybe she’s Alpha Patrick’s sister. Maybe Vivienne is his niece and that’s why he’s taking an active role in her life?”

“I can’t see Alpha Prick taking an interest in a niece, but l haven’t gone the route of the mom yet.”

I grin. Wendy doesn’t have any tolerance for sexist men.

Try that avenue. See if you come up with anything from the mom. And since I have you on the phone, tell me about your test today.”

“Aced it, thanks to my incredible tutor,” she says, rewarding me with her incredible smile.

“I’m not sure I can take any credit for that, Sphinx. You’re a brilliant woman, all I did was quiz you on the subject.”

“Well, it helped and I appreciate it,” she says.

“Do you appreciate it enough to take a trip with me back home to meet my family at the end of the school year?” I ask. I’ve been holding off, waiting to ask her until the time was right. We’ll still be a couple of months away from her birthday when this school year ends. But being part of the tech team, I don’t get summers off. We work all year long.And I really, REALLY want Wendy to meet my family.

She stops and looks at me. “You want me to meet your family?”

I shrug, trying not to show how important it is to me. ” Only if you want to. I mean, ‘ve met your entire family, so it seems only fair that you meet mine too.”

“I would love to meet your family. Do you think they would like me?” she asks.

“I think they would love you. Do you need to talk to your parents? Or would you like me to?”

“Let me talk to mom first. She can pave the way with dad.

Then, once I’ve asked them, you can talk to them about your plans, how long, where we’re going, your pack’s.

Alpha, all the things my father will want to know before he lets me drive off into the sunset with the man he’s caught me kissing on more than one occasion,” she says grinning.

“Excellent. Let me know so I can let my parents know.”

She gets back to work, but doesn’t turn off the video, so l get to see her continuing to smile when she thinks I’m not watching her.

Because I constantly keep an eye on her, I see when she locks on to something. I know the signs, both technologically and on her face when she’s caught the scent of something and she’s going on the hunt.I try to focus on my own work, but honestly, watching Wendy hunt for something is fascinating. I have no idea what she sees on my face when I find a trail I’ve been digging for, but | know l’ve never cared to watch Tracker or Hijack when they catch a scent. Tracker becomes quiet and intense. Hijack is the same except for the occasional growls or threats when he’s getting close to catching his prey. Wendy, however, has a very expressive face and I love watching her work.

I don’t disturb her, but eventually, I give up the guise of doing my own work and just watch her. When I see her face drop and she sits back, I lean forward.

“Oh, shit. Hacker?”

“Send it to me,” I say, knowing she doesn’t like what she’s found. I’m hoping she didn’t find anything about some sort of forced intimacy between Vivienne and one of Piper’s family members.

She sends me the information and I scan it quickly. Damn.

I check it. Then I double check it. Then I triple check it because I know Piper isn’t going to believe me.

Then I open a group chat with Hijack and Sphinx.
