Too Pretty to Be Your Backup novel Chapter 28

But when push came to shove, Amanda called Shanenot Travis. Awkward.

She forced a smile and turned to Shane. Thanks for picking me up, really. I owe you dinner or something next time. I’ll head home now, and you should too. Sorry for bothering you so late.

Just making the call at this hour made her feel awkward enough.

Shane only smiled and nodded. It’s no bother. Seriously, if you ever need anything, just call. Text me when you get home, okay? So I know you’re safe.

I will. Bye, Shane.”

Bye.

Getting into Traviscar was the last thing Amanda wanted, but he was already there, waiting. He’d been acting so weird lately that arguing with him just felt pointless. Whatever. It was just a free ride. home.

She slid into the car without another word and waved to Cindy. I’m heading out. Let’s meet up soon, okay?

Yeah! Bye!Cindy waved back.

The Maybach pulled away, and the tension in the car was almost unbearable. Even the driver could feel it. Travis sat on one side, stonefaced and silent. Amanda sat on the far end, scrolling through her phone and acting like Travis didn’t exist.

The ride was short. As soon as they pulled up at the villa, Amanda got out and headed straight inside. She didn’t look back, just disappeared up the stairs to her room.

She was about to close the door behind her when it jerked to a stop. Travis stood there, blocking the doorway, his tall frame filling the space. His face was gorgeous as ever, but right now, it was twisted with anger.

Why didn’t you call me?he asked, voice low and tight.

Amanda frowned. What was wrong with him lately? The old Travis would never have asked something so childish.

She didn’t even want to deal with this. I’m tired. I just want to sleep.

Traviseyes locked onto hers, dark and intense. He lowered his voice even more. “Why?”

There was something almost obsessive in his stare, like he needed an answer and wouldn’t leave without one. That annoyed her even more. Amanda let go of the door and just leaned there, halfsmiling.

Why? You really want to know? Fine. I’ll show you.

She pulled out her phone and, right in front of him, dialed Chad. The phone rang forever before finally hanging up on its own.

Amanda didn’t even blink. She called again. This time, Chad picked up.

She got straight to the point. I’m at the police station. Tell Travis to come pick me up.

Chad’s voice was icy. Amanda, do you really think it’s okay to ask Mr. Hill to come get you from the police station? Handle it yourself. Mr. Hill is busy. He doesn’t have time for this.
