Chapter 41
There was a picture Chad had sent–Travis sitting by Leila’s hospital bed, his head lowered, eyes full of tenderness. The whole scene looked peaceful and warm, like nothing bad could ever touch it.
The caption read: [Mr. Hill is with Ms. Price. Please don’t disturb him, not even on your birthday.]
There was also a short video of Travis drinking with Mateo. In it, Mateo asked, “You just got back from your trip. Aren’t you going to see Amanda?”
Travis tossed back a shot, looking annoyed. “No. She’s sulking. She can deal with it herself.”
Scrolling further, Travis found even more messages–photo after photo of him with Leila, each one marked by Chad with the same cold warning: “Do not disturb.”
His long fingers clenched around the phone, storm clouds gathering in his usually calm eyes.
Amanda had always been a bit clingy, and honestly, Travis hadn’t had the patience for it. So he’d asked Chad to handle things: buy her gifts, book her a trip, do whatever it took to cheer her up. He’d even handed Chad a bonus for the trouble.
But what had Chad actually done? He’d provoked Amanda, ignored her, made her feel small, and humiliated her every chance he got. Now he wasn’t even pretending to be polite; he was straight up insulting her, telling her to just disappear.
How could Chad cross the line like this?
Travis grabbed his phone and called Zack, head of the legal team.
“Look into everything Chad’s done at AE. I want evidence. I want him behind bars.”
“Yes, sir.”
Zack hung up, frowning in confusion. Chad was Travis‘ right–hand man. How had it come to this? But as head of AE’s legal department, Zack knew his job was to follow orders, no questions asked.
It didn’t take long to dig up the dirt. Chad hadn’t done anything that would cripple the company. He wasn’t reckless enough to go after the big fish. But he’d still crossed lines, like taking side gigs and leaking contract prices. Not for the massive, multi–million–dollar deals, but smaller ones like under five hundred thousand. To AE, that was pocket change, but Chad’s kickbacks were still significant. And illegal.
With the evidence in hand, Zack called the cops. The police wasted no time; they reached out to Chad immediately.
The moment Chad heard AE was pressing charges, his world fell apart. He’d thought he was just getting fired, and maybe he’d even get another shot someday. But now he was being sued.
He’d have to pay back every cent he took and hire the best lawyer he could find. If not, he’d end up in prison. Deep down, he knew he didn’t stand a chance against AE’s legal team. If they wanted him gone, he was done for.
Panic finally set in. Face pale, hands shaking, Chad fumbled for his phone and dialed Travis. He’d been with Travis since graduating college. Never screwed up at work. He was even from the same
