Chapter 51
Travis stood in the glass–walled conservatory, swirling his wine and staring at his reflection. The space felt big and empty, making him look even lonelier than he felt.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the way Amanda left earlier that day. She hadn’t hesitated, hadn’t looked back, hadn’t shown even a hint of regret. When he’d asked if she wanted to have dinner together, she just brushed him off like it meant nothing.
Not that long ago, it was different. If he said he was coming home for dinner, Amanda would cook up a table full of his favorite dishes. No matter how late he got back, she’d always be there waiting for him. Sometimes he’d promise he was on his way, only to get caught up at work. Even then, even if he walked in at midnight, she’d be sitting up just for him.
She used to have eyes only for him. Every time he said he’d take her out, she’d get ready early and wait for him at the restaurant, dressed up and excited.
Amanda put her love into every little part of their life together.
But today? She just didn’t care anymore.
Travis frowned, feeling an ache in his chest. Everything had changed after the engagement party was called off. He couldn’t stop obsessing over it. Was one party really that important? Was it enough to change everything?
His phone buzzed on the table. He picked it up and saw a message that made his blood run cold.
[Bro! Amanda’s cheating on you!]
Travis grabbed his phone and opened the chat. James had sent a bunch of photos showing Amanda having dinner with Shane, looking happy and relaxed. Shane was all gentle smiles, and Amanda looked cute and playful. Shane watched her with this soft, admiring look. Amanda answered him with a smile brighter than Travis had seen in ages.
It hit him hard. He’d always loved Amanda’s smile, the way she lit up a room, the energy she brought wherever she went. But when was the last time she’d smiled at him like that? He couldn’t remember. Six months ago? A year? Two? He’d never really noticed when it faded.
Travis‘ jaw tightened. He was pissed off that Amanda had turned down dinner with him–at that very same restaurant–then turned around and gone with another guy. And she looked so happy about it.
Who said she could smile at someone else like that?
He tapped out a video call to Amanda, his heart pounding with anger and something else he couldn’t
name.
Meanwhile, Amanda was in the middle of laughing at something Shane said when she accidentally got some black pepper sauce at the corner of her mouth. Shane noticed, pulled out his handkerchief, and gently wiped it away. Amanda blinked, surprised, then grinned up at him.
“Thanks, Shane.”
Shane’s eyes softened with obvious affection. “Slow down, no one’s taking your food. If you like this place, I’ll bring you here as often as you want.”
