Chapter 83
The Holdens, though unhappy, concealed it. With the tension eased, Jay raised his glass, thanking everyone. The atmosphere quickly warmed. Tanya, feeling touched by Chase’s thoughtfulness, forgot her initial displeasure. She noticed Zark’s absence and asked Ethan, “Where’s Zark?”
Let me call him.”
Ethan hung up a few moments later. There was something urgent and he had to leave. He asked me to apologize for him.”
“It’s okay, Tanya said. “Did he say what it was?”
‘No.’ Ethan paused, remembering something.”Could it be related to the girl he likes?”
Tanya’s smile faltered. “He hasn’t mentioned that since, so I don’t know.”
True. Ethan stroked his chin.”Maybe we should ask him next time?”
Tanya murmured, “Hmm.”
Meanwhile, at Amanda’s birthday party…
Chase sat down, glanced at Ashley, who had shown a flicker of surprise upon his arrival but quickly composed herself.
She asked coldly, “What?”
Chase looked away.”Nothing.”
They didn’t speak again.
Ashley’s younger cousins had never seen Chase before, so they observed him curiously. His bearing, even without overt displays of authority, spoke volumes about his position.
They quickly averted their gaze under his scrutiny. He didn’t greet them, calmly looking away.
Chase was the man Ashley loved, a love that persisted despite the years.
Steve hated Chase because of his indifference towards Ashley.
But what could he do? The Joneses were powerless against Chase.
Since Chase was present, Steve, as the host, stood and raised his glass. “Mr. Sterling, we didn’t know you’d come. It’s a pleasure to have you here.”
Chase stood, clinking glasses with him.”Mr. Jones, you’re too kind.” He addressed him formally as “Mr. Jones”, not “Uncle Steve”. Everyone noticed that. He was refusing to acknowledge their familial connection.
Ashley had expected this. She didn’t need his acknowledgment. Knowing he was here because of Emily, she said coldly, “We appreciate Emily’s thoughtfulness. If you have other plans, you may leave.”
To Ashley, Chase’s presence would only ruin the atmosphere.
Chase said calmly, “I can take my time.”
Ashley frowned, uncertain of his intentions. Ignoring her, he talked to Burke.”Our company has recently developed a new technology that allows for complete invisibility and evasion of all radar detection. I wonder if you’d be interested.”
“All radar detection?” Burke paused, finally looking at him.”Tell me more.” He might not trust others, but Chase was different.
Chase, seemingly unconcerned about leaks, began discussing the technology with Burke. Ashley and Tim, equally intrigued, listened intently. They had completely forgotten about their meal until Steve reminded them.
